Conformity to the obligatory contour principle and the strict layer hypothesis
This research investigates how the avoidance of initial gemination in Maltese is motivated by conformity to the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) and the Strict Layer Hypothesis (SLH) in light of Optimality Theory (OT) as a framework. The data of this study were collected and analyzed qualitatively. The data in this study were harvested from existing literature reviews peculiar to the Phonology of Maltese. Furthermore, the same data were verifie…
Underapplication Opacity Beyond the Non-Local Compensatory Lengthening in Modern Colloquial Persian
This research discusses the underapplication opacity, namely counterbleeding, of non-local compensatory lengthening in Modern Colloquial Persian, a style of informal speech in Iran (mostly in Tehran) motivated by moraic glottal consonants in the postconsonantal position in the coda. It concludes that building a moraic structure occurs before segmental changes, such as glottal deletion, Flop, and Spread (i.e., double flop), through weight-by-posit…
Sonority Sequencing Principle in Sabzevari Persian
This study sheds light on the relationship between the Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP) and syllable structure in Sabzevari, a Persian vernacular spoken in the Sabzevar area of Northeast Iran. Optimality Theory (OT), as a constraint-based approach, is utilized to scrutinize sonority violation and its repair strategies. The results suggest that obedience to the SSP is mandatory in Sabzevari, as shown through the treatment of word-final clusters…
