A model for the cognitive assessment of physicians
Introduction With aging in the larger population and physician workforce, there has been growing emphasis on physician cognitive impairment. We propose that the determination of cognitive status in physicians, regardless of the cause, should be based on a comparison to other physicians, rather than against the non-physician populations. Our objective was to develop a normative database of healthy physicians that can be used in physician competenc…
The predictive validity of a Brain Care Score for late-life depression and a composite outcome of dementia, stroke, and late-life depression
These data further demonstrate the shared risk factors across depression, dementia, and stroke. The findings suggest that a higher BCS, indicative of healthier lifestyle choices, is significantly associated with a lower incidence of late-life depression and a composite brain health outcome. Additional validation of the BCS is warranted to assess the weighting of its components, its motivational aspects, and its acceptability and adaptability in r…
A rationale and framework for addressing physician cognitive impairment
Medical error is costly, in terms of the health and wellbeing of the patient, their family, and the financial burden placed on the medical system. Reducing medical error is paramount to minimizing harm and improving outcomes. One potential source of medical error is physician cognitive impairment. Determining how to effectively assess and mange physician cognitive impairment is an important, albeit difficult problem to address. There have been ca…
Rural/urban differences in the prevalence of stroke risk factors
PURPOSE: We previously described the magnitude of rural-urban differences in the prevalence of stroke risk factors and stroke mortality. In this report, we sought to extend the understanding of rural-urban differences in the prevalence of stroke risk factors by using an enhanced definition of rural-urban status and assessing the impact of neighborhood socioeconomic status (nSES) on risk factor differences. METHODS: This analysis included 28,242 p…
Neighborhood Walkability as a Predictor of Incident Hypertension in a National Cohort Study
The built environment (BE) has been associated with health outcomes in prior studies. Few have investigated the association between neighborhood walkability, a component of BE, and hypertension. We examined the association between neighborhood walkability and incident hypertension in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study. Walkability was measured using Street Smart Walk Score based on participants' residentia…
Global Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases and Risk Factors, 1990–2019
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consisten…
Black–White Differences in Cardiovascular Disease Mortality
Objectives. To determine factors that explain the higher Black:White cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality rates among US adults. Methods. We analyzed data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study from 2003 to 2017 to estimate Black:White hazard ratios (HRs) for CVD mortality within subgroups younger than 65 years and aged 65 years or older. Results. Among 29 054 participants, 41.0% who were Black and 54.9% who were…
Use of Medicare Claims Data for the Identification of Myocardial Infarction
OBJECTIVES: Assess the validity of Medicare claims for identifying myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: We used data from 9951 Medicare beneficiaries 65 years and above in the Reasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke study. Between 2003 and 2012, 669 participants had an MI identified and adjudicated through study procedures (ie, the gold standard), and 552 had an overnight inpatient claim with a code for MI (ICD-9 code 410.x0 or 41…
Cardiovascular Health in African Americans
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Population-wide reductions in cardiovascular disease incidence and mortality have not been shared equally by African Americans. The burden of cardiovascular disease in the African American community remains high and is a primary cause of disparities in life expectancy between African Americans and whites. The objectives of the present scientific statement are to describe cardiovascular health in African Americans and to hi…
Differential Impact of Risk Factors in Blacks and Whites in the Development of Atrial Fibrillation
Addressing Stroke Risk Factors in Black and White Americans
We found that addressed hypertension and hyperlipidemia in stroke naïve participants were significantly lower in Blacks than Whites. Our observations call attention to areas that require further investigation, such as why Black Americans may not be receiving evidence-based pharmacologic therapy for hypertension and hyperlipidemia or why Black Americans are not at goal blood pressure or goal LDL. A better understanding of this information is criti…
US Mortality
Caregiving Strain and All-Cause Mortality
High perceived caregiving strain is associated with increased all-cause mortality after controlling for appropriate covariates. High caregiving strain constitutes a significant health concern and these caregivers should be targeted for appropriate interventions
Quality of life after stroke
Confirmatory factor analysis of the validity of the SF-12 for persons with and without a history of stroke
The Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke Study
The REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study is a national, population-based, longitudinal study of 30,000 African-American and white adults aged ≧45 years. The objective is to determine the causes for the excess stroke mortality in the Southeastern US and among African-Americans. Participants are randomly sampled with recruitment by mail then telephone, where data on stroke risk factors, sociodemographic, lifestyle…
Air Pollution and Cardiovascular Disease
Air pollution is a heterogeneous, complex mixture of gases, liquids, and particulate matter. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a consistent increased risk for cardiovascular events in relation to both short- and long-term exposure to present-day concentrations of ambient particulate matter. Several plausible mechanistic pathways have been described, including enhanced coagulation/thrombosis, a propensity for arrhythmias, acute arterial va…
Tobacco Farming and Public Health
The tobacco industry remains a formidable influence in thwarting tobacco control efforts, in part because industry leaders have raised policymaker and public concern about how tobacco control might negatively impact tobacco farmers. In this study, we interviewed a random, stratified sample of 528 tobacco farmers in the Southeast and 991 U.S. residents about issues related to tobacco farmers. We found that a majority of the U.S. public expressed t…

Tobacco farmers and diversification
These data suggest that farmers and health professionals have reason to establish dialogue around diversification and using excise tax increases to fund diversification and to promote health. Tobacco companies have been successful in mobilising farmers against tax increases, but efforts must be made to show farmers that tax increases can be beneficial both to their diversification efforts and to public health. The outcome of this dialogue may wel…
The Pseudo-Clementine Writings and Shem-Tob's Hebrew Matthew
In his History of Dogma , Adolph Harnack wrote that the ‘Pseudo-Clementines contribute absolutely nothing to our knowledge of the origin of the Catholic Church and doctrine.’ Hans Lietzmann, Harnack's successor in Berlin, concluded similarly in his assessment of these writings. He wrote that the Clementines are ‘fictions without historical basis, and valueless for the study of the early Christian and Judaistic period’

A Primitive Hebrew Gospel of Matthew and the Tol'doth Yeshu
The Tol'doth Yeshu is a medieval Jewish antigospel which exists in various forms. Basically it says that Jesus was born illegitimate, learned the Name of God in the temple, performed miracles by pronouncing the Divine Name and finally was executed by the Jews. His body was stolen from the tomb by Yehuda the gardener, an act which led to the assertion by the disciples that he had arisen from the dead and had ascended into heaven. The date of the T…

Romans 3
Romans 3:21–31 is a perplexing passage made up of important words and phrases. Some of the most crucial elements of Christian theology hinge on it. Entire movements within Christian history have stood or fallen with its interpretation. With few exceptions scholars have given more than ample consideration to every detail, although a consensus of opinion lies in the future. This paper is designed (1) to summarize the issue over the unity of the pas…

The ex-mental patient as an employee
In light of studies showing negative employer attitudes toward ex-mental patients, a comparative study was made of ex-patient employees and non-disabled employees. Results showed ex-patients indistinguishable from randomly selected employees in job performance, human relations, and overall rating. These findings are discussed in terms of the general employability of the mentally restored. The work project studied is offered as a model
Harmonistic Readings in the Old Syriac Gospels
There are two extant copies of the Old Syriac gospels, the evangelion da-mepharreshe. One, the Curetonian Codex (=C), was discovered by William Cureton and edited by him in 1858. It dates to the middle or later part of the fifth century. The other, the Sinaitic Codex (=S), was discovered by Mrs. Agnes Smith Lewis and her sister Mrs. Margaret Dunlop Gibson at St. Catherine's monastery on Mount Sinai. It dates to the later part of the fourth or beg…
