  • Le siècle de la légèreté: Émergences d’un paradigme du dix-huitième siècle français

    Open Access•D Brewer•ARTICLE•French History•2022

Situated somewhere between the figure of the stereotype and the discourse of ideology lies what Marine Ganofsky and Jean-Alexandre Perras, the co-editors of this collection of essays, name the paradigm. Example, model, pattern, archetype, matrix of knowledge, aesthetic form and analytic tool, the particular paradigm examined here is lightness, légèreté. In a thoughtful introduction, the co-editors expose the complex semantic field on which légère…

  • Psychiatric comorbidity for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD): A latent profile analysis and implications for treatment

Sonia Terhaag, SEAN COWLISHAW et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2019

The comorbidity profiles of veterans in treatment for PTSD can be distinguished by levels of severity and the specific presence or absence of alcohol use problems. • The Encyclopédie: Innovation and legacy

    Open Access•D Brewer•CHAPTER•New Essays on Diderot•2011

Conceived by a Parisian printer as a modest business venture, a French translation of Ephraim Chambers' two-volume Cyclopaedia printed in London in 1728, the Encyclopédie far outstripped all initial plans. Entrusted to Jean le Rond d'Alembert and Denis Diderot, the project quickly took on vaster proportions, ultimately becoming one of the greatest commercial and intellectual enterprises of eighteenth-century France. The first volume of the work a…

  • The Discourse of Enlightenment in Eighteenth-Century France: Diderot and the Art of Philosophizing

    Open Access•D Brewer•BOOK•Discourse of Enlightenment in…•1993

This study explores the problems faced by writers of the Enlightenment, who attempted to demystify all previous forms of knowledge by applying rationalist critiques that can in turn be applied to examine their own critical work. It focuses on the works of one of the best-known writers of eighteenth-century France, Denis Diderot, analysing his experimentation with presenting critical knowledge. Paying close attention to the formal-poetic nature of…

    D Brewer•ARTICLE•Theatre Journal•1986

For most historians, eighteenth-century French is of slight importance in the larger story they have to tell. Characterized at best as one of those well known periods of transition, its heterogeneity is usually minimized or otherwise recuperated. In this story, the idea of transition is in fact an operative element of narrative, producing a story that can be told as if theatre were a unified process of transformation -development and becomingdriv…

  • Painting in Shreds

    Jean Clay, D Brewer•ARTICLE•SubStance•1981

Robert Ryman's position is one of instability and proclivity, situated in the gap separating a decision from an investment. Painting is a maneuver, a capturing that at once fills and diverts what is presupposed by a program, in a movement of repetition and re-monstration. What is there already-the choice of format and pigment, the type of tool and support-is put to the test of an excorporation that turns back upon the painter's enonce, driving th…

  • Language and Grammar: Diderot and the Discourse of Encyclopedism

    D Brewer•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Studies•1979

TO READ is to bring into play, with varying degrees of awareness, a theory of language. Our belief in the meaning of a particular text follows from our understanding of how words signify and language functions, in the context of both everyday communication and written or literary texts. Conversely, any theory of language implicitly contains guidelines for reading, as can be seen in the use that literary critics have made of the writings of Saussu…
