As a response to globalization, the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is indicative of a new awareness among African leaders that they must respond in ways that create empowering opportunities for African societies to benefit from, rather than be victims of, globalization. Following a review of Africa's responses to previous epochs of globalization, we examine the relevance of leadership given the dismal record of past development …

  • Kenya

    Open Access•Stephen N Ndegwa•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2003•Cited by: 28•References: 3

In December 2002, the long-ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) lost massively to a united opposition bringing together 15 parties bound in an electoral pact. This outcome ended one of Africa's most intransigent semi-authoritarian regimes and induced great optimism in Kenya and elsewhere for fundamental reform. This paper analyzes several structural and strategic factors that combined to produce opposition unity, the lack of which was seen …

Stephen N Ndegwa, Stephen Ndegwa•BOOK•Decade of Democracy in Africa•2001

The democratic experiment in Africa has had a checkered history over the past ten years. Analysts of this process tend to focus on the political and legal space instead of including broader issues such as norms, generational change and class. Authors in this volume argue that African civil society is less likely to support democracy, they measure African democracy by the women's rights movements, unravel the mythical hope of technology and point …

  • Citizenship and Ethnicity

    Open Access•Stephen N Ndegwa•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1997•Cited by: 73•References: 58

In some African countries, democratic openings have intensified ethnic competition and led to protracted transitions or outright conflict. In Kenya, I argue, the stalled transition reflects the effects ofrepublicancitizenship in ethnic political communities andliberalcitizenship in the national political community. This duality in citizenship engenders conflict over democracy-conceived as liberal majoritarian democracy-and results in ethnic coali…

Others, such as Hyden (1983, 193), argue directly that Africa needs a new paradigm, or set of paradigms to explain the continent's development processes. Although there often is a call to combine or integrate various paradigms, it seldom is accompanied by specific suggestions or guidelines about how to create a new theoretical approach …
