Beyond treatment effects: Comorbid psychopathologies and long-term outcomes among substance-abusing delinquents
Secondary analyses of a randomized clinical trial controlled for treatment condition effects and examined the impact of comorbid psychopathologies on the mental health, physical health, and criminal behavior of 80 substance abusing delinquents approximately 5 years later in emerging adulthood. Overall, emerging adults with a comorbid disorder during adolescence scored higher on psychopathology, criminal behavior, and health problems. Participants…
Beyond Treatment Effects: Predicting Emerging Adult Alcohol and Marijuana Use among Substance-Abusing Delinquents
Secondary analyses of a randomized clinical trial examined the effects of 4 putative risk factors and 2 protective factors in predicting drug use among 80 emerging adults treated 5 years earlier for delinquency and alcohol and/or marijuana use disorders. Frequency of marijuana use and the number of comorbid psychiatric disorders in adolescence predicted cannabis use in emerging adulthood. Increasing academic competence at high levels of social co…
Aggressive juvenile offenders transitioning into emerging adulthood: Factors discriminating persistors and desistors
Aggressive juvenile offenders (mean age = 15.6 years) were classified as persistors (n = 55) or desistors (n = 25) with aggressive crimes 5 years later (mean age = 20.6 years). At adolescence, desistors engaged in fewer aggressive acts, committed fewer property crimes, and behaved less aggressively and more positively toward peers. At emerging adulthood, desistors reported greater emotional support, higher job satisfaction, closer peer relationsh…
Systems and Bidirectional Influences in Families
Family systems theory and bidirectionality are two models that seek to explain the nature of relationship influences on children's and adults' development. Points of convergence and divergence between the models are discussed and empirically examined in a sample of 72 nondivorced and 56 stepfather families. A multirater, multimethod design was used to model effects of family relationships on adolescent social competence, cognitive agency, and ext…

Parent-child interaction and gender differences in early adolescents' adaptation to stepfamilies
This study examined gender differences in early adolescents' adaptation to mother-custody stepfamilies and extended previous work that found that girls have more difficulties adjusting to these stepfamilies than do boys. Parent-child interaction was compared in mother-custody stepfamilies and intact families, with a focus on gender-of-child effects on parent-stepparent behavior toward child and child behavior toward parent-stepparent

Transformations in Family Relations at Puberty: Effects of Family Context
Previous research has identified transformations in family relationships that occur during early adolescence in part as a function of the child's pubertal development. A longitudinal, multimethod, multimeasure study of family adjustment to remarriage was conducted to examine how these transformations might be altered as a function of concomitant adjustment to family reorganization in single-mother and stepfamily homes. It was found that transform…
