Tribes in Modern Yemen: An Anthology
In Yemen, "tribe" is a historically rooted, emic concept of social representation. Rooted in remotest antiquity, over the last centuries the concept of tribe in Yemen has undergone transformations, but also featured aspects of continuity. Today, with the emergence of massive political change, the eruption of popular uprisings, armed conflicts, external military intervention and the associated weakness of the state, tribalism seems to be gaining i…
Fish as Property on the Small Aral Sea, Kazakhstan: Property and Ownership
This chapter looks at a postsocialist fishery in Kazakhstan to explore the relationship between property rules designed to manage natural resources, and practices of resource exploitation. The Aral Sea is famous for its desiccation over the second half of the twentieth century, which stemmed from Soviet irrigation projects; in 2006 a World Bank/Republic of Kazakhstan project restored a small part of the sea, and fish catches have recently recover…
Nadav Samin. Of Sand or Soil: Genealogy and Tribal Belonging in Saudi Arabia
This is an excellent book, well researched, well organized, and well written. Genealogy, which is the book’s real subject, seems in much of the world a natural fact, yet it becomes an obsession at certain times and places. In his introduction to Of Sand or Soil: Genealogy and Tribal Belonging in Saudi Arabia, Nadav Samin mentions early modern Seville. Readers will think of other examples. Most of us will know something of Saint-Simon’s obsessions…
Legalism: Rules and Categories
Legalism: Anthropology and History
"In this volume leading historians and anthropologists with an interest in law gather to analyse the nature and meaning of law in diverse societies. They start from the concept of legalism, taken from the anthropologist Lloyd Fallers, whose 1960s work on Africa engaged, unusually, with jurisprudence. The concept highlights appeal to categories and rules. The degree to which legalism in this sense informs people's lives varies within and between s…
Aspects of Non-State Law: Early Yemen and Perpetual Peace
This chapter explores the ‘laws of protection’ in Yemen (c.1400 onwards). By examining a case where law can be shown to work ‘sideways’ rather than ‘top down’, it is shown that legalism need not be dependent upon centralized coercion: but explicit rules nonetheless form binding obligations.

Monarchies and Nations: Globalisation and Identity in the Arab States of the Gulf
Despite their small populations, the Arab states of the Gulf exercise an enormous and global influence. In most academic literature, however, they are treated as if their only importance were as counters on a strategic game board. This book takes a quite different approach. By combining the views of anthropologists, political scientists and others, it explores how the citizen populations of these states define themselves in a wider context. As el…

Stereotypes and Political Styles: Islamists and Tribesfolk in Yemen
An outbreak of fighting in May 1994 put Yemen in the world's headlines when, from one point of view, the unity of Yemen proclaimed in May four years earlier was confirmed by force. One topic which straddles that period has been Islah, an Islamist party of unusual form. The present article explores the rhetorical axes that defined Islah. Briefly put, a supposedly “fundamentalist,” even “radical,” party, was in fact more a party of the establishmen…
Tribes, Government, and History in Yemen
Professor Dresch combines ethnography with history to describe the tribal system over the last thousand years, and examines the values the tribal people themselves bring to the contemporary world of nation states. Drawing heavily on local histories and unpublished documents, as well as on three years' field work, he discusses the place of these tribes in the world around them from the tenth century to the twentieth. Beginning and ending with the …

The Significance of the Course Events Take in Segmentary Systems
Arguments about segmentation in the Middle Eastern context still turn on the presence or absence of solidary groups. Yemeni material is used to show that this is largely irrelevant. Segmentation concerns structural principles that apply to groups and individuals alike, to events that "follow the rules" and to those that contradict them. The principles of segmentation underlie a far wider range of events than those dealt with by segmentary lineage…
