  • Morir morirás ‘for certain you will die’

    Open Access•Andrés Enrique-Arias, Andrés Enrique‐Arias et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Historical Linguistics•2026

In this article we analyze the translation strategies used by medieval and early modern Spanish translators when rendering the infinitive absolute (IA) in the Hebrew Bible. In a literal translation, this structure, which had no immediate equivalent in the Spanish of the time, would be rendered with the infinitive followed by a conjugated form of the same verb, as in Spanish llorar llorarás ‘to cry you will cry’, meaning either ‘for sure you will …

  • From aspectual to degree quantifiers

    Open Access•Katharina Gerhalter, Stefan Koch•ARTICLE•ELAD-SILDA•2025

This paper examines four adverbial cognates in Spanish and Portuguese, Sp. por completo, Pt. por completo, Sp. completamente, and Pt. completamente, from a historical and functional point of view. Our analysis is based on three major corpora of Spanish and Portuguese (CDH, CdP, and CORPES XXI). The four adverb(ial)s share the same base adjective or etymon, Lat. completus, from which Pt. por completo only stems indirectly, as it is probably a calq…

  • Paradigmas y polifuncionalidad

    Open Access•Katharina Gerhalter•BOOK•Paradigmas y Polifuncionalidad•2020

This study presents a corpus-based semasiologial and onomasiological analysis of the paradigm of adjectives and adverbs of accuracy. Looking specifically at justo / justamente , cabal / cabalmente , preciso / precisamente , and exacto / exactamente , it is above all concerned with the development of three pragmatic-discursive functions: focalization, affirmation, and reformulation.

  • Innovación y analogía en la creación de los marcadores de reformulación más exactamente y más precisamente = Innovation and analogy in the creation of reformulation markers más exactamente "more exact…

    Open Access•Katharina Gerhalter•ARTICLE•Estudios Humanísticos. Filología•2018

El objetivo de este trabajo es el estudio diacrónico de dos marcadores de reformulación que presentan paralelismos formales (más + adverbio) y semánticos. Sin embargo, la comparación de más exactamente y más precisamente muestra que no surgen paralelamente ni tampoco por los mismos caminos de evolución. Adaptamos el modelo teórico de cooptation para diferenciar entre creación innovadora y analogía. Además, los marcadores prueban la distinción ent…
