Generalized Full Matching
Matching is a conceptually straightforward method to make groups of units comparable on observed characteristics. The method is, however, limited to settings where the study design is simple and the sample is moderately sized. We illustrate these limitations by asking what the causal effects would have been if a large-scale voter mobilization experiment that took place in Michigan for the 2006 election were scaled up to the full population of reg…
Public Health Risks Associated with Heavy Metal and Microbial Contamination of Drinking Water in Australia
Recently in Australia concerns have been raised regarding the contamination of municipal drinking water supplies with lead. This is of particular concern to children due to the impact of lead exposure on cognitive development and as such these findings have received much media attention. The response from legislators has been swift, and The Victorian School Building Authority has announced that all new schools and school upgrade works will only u…

Making Güeras
This article examines discourses of whiteness and color in Mexico through a discussion of White Secret, a widely available skin-lightening cosmetic product. In an analysis of a televised infomercial advertising the product, we examine contextualizations of whiteness in Mexico, as figured through the product's representations of light-skinned female bodies and advanced cosmetic technology. We consider the ways that White Secret can speak to broade…
Streets, Bedrooms, and Patios
Diversity characterizes the people of Oaxaca, Mexico. Within this city of half a million, residents are rising against traditional barriers of race and class, defining new gender roles, and expanding access for the disabled. Higgins and Coen focus their attention on groups that are often marg…

"Jodido, Pero Contento"Urban Economics and the Popular Revolution in Nicaragua
The People of Nicaragua have struggled through a decade that was torn between revolutionary triumph and counterreactions to that triumph. They have been stymied in finding a political economy for their revolution. Nicaraguans under the Sandinistas referred to theirs as a mixed economy, where the private and social sectors pursue cooperative instead of exploitive relations. When asked to explain their economic state, the Nicaraguans often said, "J…
