  • Preliminary Results from the Gardabani Archaeological Survey (GAS), Republic of Georgia

Open Access•Khaled Abu Jayyab, Ira Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2026

Despite representing the heartland of the Shulaveri-Shomu Neolithic “culture” and the Sioni/Tsopi Chalcolithic “culture,” the Gardabani region in the Republic of Georgia is a virtual terra incognita for archaeological survey and excavation. In the summer of 2019, the Gardabani Archaeological Survey project conducted a regional pedestrian survey to document the area and understand how its settlement patterns compared, both synchronically and diach…

  • The Shamash Gate, Nineveh

Open Access•Timothy Harrison, Khaled AbuJayyab et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2025

The Shamash Gate of Nineveh is one of the major gates that leads into the city from the east. Archaeological work at the gate has been on hold since the early 1970s, when the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage embarked on excavations and reconstruction of the gate. A preliminary investigation of the Shamash Gate in 2020 by the Iraqi–Italian Nineveh Expedition (NINEV_E), under the directorship of Nicolò Marchetti, revealed both the cons…

  • Who Founded Quilcapampa

During the Middle Horizon (600–1000 CE), the Wari state’s influence expanded across a broad swath of the central Andes. To better understand the organization of this state and its relationship to outlying regions, we conducted a social network analysis with a database of human images—cataloged as “agents”—as depicted on Wari-associated art. Agent analyses depended on trained, visual acuity for interpreting ancient artistic expressions that distin…

  • Stability and Change in Potting Communities across Mesopotamia from the Early Ubaid to Late Chalcolithic 1

Khaled Abu Jayyab, Elizabeth Gibbons et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 54

In this work we examine developments in ceramic use through the Ubaid and Late Chalcolithic 1 periods in Greater Mesopotamia. Our paper is a heuristic study of ceramic assemblages across the period from 5300 to 4200 BCE. This period roughly corresponds to the Ubaid 3 and 4, and Late Chalcolithic 1. We explore the periods that correspond to the spread and dissolution of what has been referred to as the Ubaid interaction sphere. This is carried out…

  • Complicating an early state

Open Access•Elizabeth Gibbons, Elizabeth Gibbon et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Processual models of the early state envisioned hierarchical societies with stable social and political structures. More recent research, however, has questioned this vision. Here, the authors explore Middle Horizon (AD 700-1000) Wari state iconography to provide an example of early state social and political organisation from the Central Andes. Social network analysis (SNA) of human figures ('agents') depicted in Wari art identifies links betwee…

  • Late Chalcolithic Ceramic Development in Southern Iraqi Kurdistan

Open Access•Steve Renette, Khaled Abu Jayyab et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2021

Kani Shaie is a small archaeological site in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, centrally located in the Bazian Basin, a narrow valley at the western edge of the Zagros Mountains along the major route between Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. Its main mound was inhabited almost continuously from the fifth to the middle of the third millennium, c. 5000–2500 B.C.E. This period of Mesopotamian prehistory, corresponding to the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age, wi…

  • Late Chalcolithic Occupation at Tell er-Ramadi (Syria)

Khaled Abu Jayyab, Arno Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 33

This paper presents the results of the 2004-2006 salvage operations conducted at Tell er-Ramadi, located along the west bank of the lower Syrian Euphrates River. Ramadi contains well-preserved deposits dating to the 4th millennium BC (Late Chalcolithic or LC period), with the most well-preserved sequence dating to the later part of the LC2 to LC4. During the initial phase of occupation, the site was occupied by northern Mesopotamian groups, follo…

  • Jawafat Shaban and the Late Neolithic in Wâdî al-Bîr, Northern Jordan

Edward B Banning, Khaled Abu Jayyab et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2018•Cited by: 1
