  • The Concept of Memra in Targum Amos

Open Access•Gudrun Elisabeth Lier, Anna Fransina Van Zyl•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2020

The Memra concept is notable in Aramaic Bible translation or Targum. In Targum Amos, the term is employed seven times in the Aramaic rendering of the Hebrew text of the prophet Amos. This study investigates how scholars interpreted the Memra concept in the context of earlier studies that focussed on the Pentateuchal Targums and the Former Prophets. It then ventures to establish how the notion of Memra is used in TJ Amos and how this compares with…

  • An Appraisal of Source Material for the Study of Targum Minor Prophets

Gudrun Elisabeth Lier, Gudrun Lier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2017

The study of Aramaic Bible translations (Targumim) continues to be a valuable source of information, not only for uncovering the history of biblical interpretation but also for providing insights for the study of linguistics and translation techniques. In comparison with work done on the Pentateuchal Targumim and Targum Former Prophets, research on the individual books of Targum Minor Prophets has been scant. By providing an overview of selected …

Gudrun Elisabeth Lier, Gudrun Lier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2017

The function of מַַשׂÖ1⁄4Ö ̧× is then reviewed by systematically analysing its use in various textual contexts throughout the Hebrew Bible to identify how this term was applied in popular speech, literature, and translation. An attempt is made to categorise מַשׂÖ1⁄4Ö ̧× into spe…

  • Marked Nominal Forms in Targum Malachi

Gudrun Elisabeth Lier, Gudrun Lier•ARTICLE•Journal for Semitics•2017

The use of formally marked and unmarked nouns varies and has changed in Aramaic dialects throughout the course of history. Until recently, it was assumed that determination in nouns in Targum Prophets was no longer working properly since extant grammars do not point out specific rules of grammar and syntax in this regard. It has been argued that the marked form of the noun came to depose the unmarked form. However, a focused study on Targum Samue…
