Some Aspects of the Bioerosion of Stone Artefact Found Underwater
Within the framework of the project Restoring Underwater started in 2001, the ISCR Marine Biology sector with the ISCR Underwater Archaeology Operation Unit has begun a study of the deterioration of stone artefacts exposed to marine environments (Torre Astura – Nettuno; Baiae – Naples). These studies have allowed to better understanding the factor of degradation by biological, mineralogical, and petrographic analyses and to develop measures for t…
The ISCR Project ‘Restoring Underwater’
The project 'Restoring Underwater' launched and conducted by the Underwater Archaeology Operations Unit of the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR, Rome, Italy) is aimed at the study and the experimentation of instruments, materials, methodologies, and techniques for the restoration, conservation, and in situ display of ancient submerged artefacts. The project commenced in 2001 with the restoration of the vivaria of the R…
Three unpublished collections of South Arabian coins
The author presents the South Arabian holdings of three museums in Israel, forty‐eight coins in all. The coins comprise one Qatabanian coin and several coins each of three very common Himyarite and Sabaean types (two issues of ‘Amdân Bayyin Yuhaqbid, kingdom of Saba’ and dhû Raydân, and various coins of the Sabaean Bucranium series). The paper gives the opportunity to make some remarks on South Arabian Coinage
Underwater archaeological parks
The conservation in situ of underwater archaeological heritage is a highly stimulating subject for both archaeologist and conservator as it permits planning and experimentation of new treatment methods opening up new possibilities for conservation, protection and scientific research. This paper offers some remarks on this subject and shows the experience of some Italian underwater archaeological parks
Observations on 29 silver coins from the Bāǧil hoard
In 1989 a newly discovered hoard of 181 silver coins of the “imitation ancient Athenian tetradrachm” type was documented by Francine Stone. The coins had been found in the area of Baǧil, near the village of al‐ʿAydab on the eastern slope of Ǧabal Ǧarayd. The typological analysis of this hoard has led to the dating of its burial around the end of the 4th century BC. Fixing the date of the deposit of Baǧil was important not only for typological stu…
