  • Recognizing Corsica

    Patrick Hossay•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 3

Corsican nationalism offers a valuable opportunity to identify the uniqueness of nationalism as a mode of political claim making as well as the characteristics nationalist mobilization shares with other forms of collective action. Like all nations, the Corsican nation does not exist as objective reality, but must be projected as real; it must be made to appear real through the drama of political struggle. Thus, unlike leaders in other forms of so…

  • Partisans and Nationalists

    Open Access•Patrick Hossay•ARTICLE•Social Science History•2003•References: 7

The author provides a critical response to the social scientific literature that cast political interest and cleavages as the projection of sociocultural dynamics onto the political scene. Sociopolitical cleavages in general, and nationalism in particular, are thus viewed as having taken form outside the partisan arena, and only subsequent to their societal formation do they take on political importance. Through a comparison of the development of…

  • Democracy in Peril?

Open Access•Patrick Hossay, Aristide R Zolberg et al.•CHAPTER•Shadows over Europe•2002

The alarm bells are ringing. Journalists, policymakers, and many researchers have warned of the grave threat to democracy posed by the electoral rise of extreme right parties. Either implicitly or explicitly, pundits and partisans indiscriminately weave a coarse historical comparison and warn of the fundamental threat to the principles and practice of liberal governance presented by the rise of the extreme right. Throughout Europe, the extreme ri…

  • Country Profiles

    Open Access•Patrick Hossay•CHAPTER•Shadows over Europe•2002

The Austrian Federal Assembly is composed of two houses—the Nationalrat , the lower house, and the Bundesrat , the upper house. Legislative authority is concentrated in the Nationalrat . Its 183 members are elected in a three-tiered system, based on proportional representation with a 4 percent electoral hurdle for representation. The sixty-four members of the much weaker Bundesrat are elected by the legislatures of the nine provinces. The governo…

  • The Development of Radical Right Parties in Western Europe

Open Access•Martin A Schain, Martin Schain et al.•CHAPTER•Shadows over Europe•2002

Throughout Western Europe, popular support for radical xenophobic parties has grown dramatically over the past two decades. Indeed, parties supporting ideologies that had been relegated to the lunatic fringe in the postwar period have now established a significant and enduring presence in most Western European states. Populist calls for the expulsion of all peoples of immigrant descent and a return to a “traditional” and “racially pure” Europe ar…

  • Why Flanders?

    Open Access•Patrick Hossay•CHAPTER•Shadows over Europe•2002

The radical right in Belgium presents something of a quandary for those who would offer universal explanations for the electoral success of radical right parties in Europe. Belgium is split socially, politically, and economically between Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north and French-speaking Wallonia to the south. Brussels, while predominantly Francophone, is located in the northern, Dutch-speaking portion of the country. As a result of decades…

  • Our People First!' Understanding the Resonance of the Vlaams Blok's Xenophobic Programme

    Patrick Hossay•ARTICLE•Social Identities•1996•Cited by: 1

This article begins with a critical appraisal of some of the more general accounts of the recent rise of the xenophobic right, subsequently arguing that these explanations are necessarily incomplete and perhaps misleading int heir attempts at universality. It is argued that a more useful method of analysis must problematise the very contention of social difference on which these movements are based, and focus on nationalism as a mode of claim mak…
