This research on 116 parents of young offenders from the Montreal Centre area indicates that delinquency and its consequences have a negative impact on most parents. Basic statistics are presented for stress, fatigue, health, and general happiness. In addition, qualitative data from the young offenders' official files corroborate these results and offer more details concerning the areas of parents' lives that are affected. This paper examines the…

    Anne-Marie Ambert, Anne‐marie Ambert•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1994•Cited by: 11

In this article, three general areas of research and social concern pertaining to parenting are discussed within an international perspective focusing on recent social changes as well as on constructs of parenting. First, the combined example of the Western emphasis on mothering and on intense emotional bonding between parents and children is utilized to illustrate how the biases arising out of particular Western constructs affect research paradi…

  • A Qualitative Study of Peer Abuse and Its Effects: Theoretical and Empirical Implications

    Anne-Marie Ambert, Anne‐marie Ambert•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1994•Cited by: 6

Peer is an underestimated and neglected social problem (e.g., Besag, 1989; Roland & Munthe, 1989; Tattum & Lane, 1989), usually approached in psychology as aggression (bullying) as well as victimization and rejection (e.g., Asher & Coie, 1990; Asher & Wheeler, 1985; Pepler & Rubin, 1991). Peer has rarely been analyzed from a sociocultural perspective (Olweus, 1991), and is not generally used as a distinct concept. It is not yet an accepted topic …

    Open Access•Anne-Marie Ambert, Anne‐marie Ambert•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1988•Cited by: 7•References: 11

The ex-spousal relationship is one which is not frequently researched, in part because of the methodological difficulties inherent to interviewing both ex-spouses. In this exploratory report on 85 ex-couples, we found an impressive level of agreement concerning the normative aspects of the ex-spousal relationship. At the behavioral level, no matter how the data were analysed, post-marital harmony was a minority phenomenon. Contacts between ex-spo…

In contrast, adolescents living in legally intact families had the highest rate of church attendance. Gender differences and similarities are also presented. Overt religiosity is herein discussed in terms of its possible relevance to…
