The “Havana Syndrome”: Atmospheres of anxiety and neurological states
This paper examines the phenomenon known as Havana Syndrome, first reported by United States embassy staff in Cuba in 2016, as a case study of how collective anxiety and geopolitical tension can produce embodied experiences of harm. Rather than seeking to identify a definitive biomedical cause for the reported symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, and cognitive disturbances, the authors situate the Havana Syndrome within a broader socio-politic…
Se vende . Home-making and betrayal of the future in Eastern Cuba
This photo-essay explores the migration crisis that has hit Cuba in recent years, with a focus on street-front material traces such as real estate sale signs testifying to the material cultural belongings left behind by people leaving or attempting to leave the country. The authors collected photographs in Santiago de Cuba from 2023 to 2025. We collaborated to develop collage visuals to show at a glance the quantity of houses for sale and the cre…

Under pressure: Catching the pulse of a Cuban crisis
Pressure refers to a force exerted on humans, objects, and ecosystems that prevents or facilitates the flow and growth of things, movements, bodies, and ideas. Cuba has to cope with a lot of pressure due to the collapse of the tourist industry in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, an aging infrastructure, a malfunctioning system, and the long-lasting U.S. embargo. I propose to think through pressure in order to highlight some of the strategi…

Sensing the Night: Nocturnal Filmmaking in Guantánamo, Cuba
Guardians of the Night (2018) is a short‐length film set in Guantánamo, Cuba, that aims to engage with a temporal scape too long disregarded by visual anthropologists: the night. This article, written by the filmmakers, reflects on some of the challenges and opportunities offered by the night for ethnographic fieldwork, filmmaking, and more specifically, sound recording. We locate our work as part of a movement to recognize the night as a spatiot…
Our First Open Access Issue
marked one year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.Vaccine roll-out is now the topic of the day.Public health orders give hope for further openings at the same time as threats of fourth and fifth waves loom large.Still, the promise of an in-person fall term for public universities brightens the horizon.Possibility is in the air. While a more lightness-of-being is long-awaited, the penetrating questions about so…

Positioning the New Reggaetón Stars in Cuba: From Home-Based Recording Studios to Alternative Narratives
Microtopia in Counterpoint: Relational Aesthetics and the Echo Project
This article takes as its starting point the ethnographic experience of producing and editing a series of video clips that virtually unite musicians who have never met and who live in different places; it engages with the experience of producing an illusion, a virtual encounter, and a relational piece. The Echo project and its associated installation, "Echo ~ the first tie", were created with the aim of exploring the concept of "microtopias in th…

Music and Artistic Production in Post-Revolutionary Cuba
On 2 December 2006, a military parade took place in the Plaza of the Revolution in Havana. It was followed by a march of approximately 300,000 Cubans (according to the official Cuban press). The event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the landing of the Granma, the ship from Mexico that had transported 82 revolutionaries to the island, among them Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara. The same date was also chosen for the belated celebration of t…

Complicity Through Montage: A Call for an Intercultural Approach to Ethnographic Filmmaking
The recent production of participatory ethnographies and experimental texts shows the concern of many anthropologists to address the gap that exists between Self and Other. This article lays the foundation for a critical exploration of such attempts by questioning the extent to which Self and the Other can be articulated within a unique audio-visual text. In this article, I propose that the adoption of interculturally conscious forms of montage t…
Cet article exa…

Alexandra Vazquez takes us through the sound paths of musicians in both Cuba and Greater Cuba (mainly the United States but also Europe) in a beautifully written book that goes beyond an in-depth account of musicians' life. Her observations spread like droplets of watercolor on a porous sheet of paper, allowing for the exploration of unanticipated detours and contours. She provides exquisite descriptions of the textures, characters, and colors of t…
