Treatment differentiation between group music therapy and recreational choir singing for people with dementia and depression living in residential care homes
The current findings confirm treatment differentiation between the two music-based interventions delivered as part of the MIDDEL trial. The results may indicate distinctive characteristics of professional music therapy as compared to community choir singing within residential dementia care, while also identifying overlaps in practice. Understanding the differences and similarities between these two popular music-based interventions can guide futu…
Mother–Preterm Infant Contingent Interactions During Supported Infant-Directed Singing in the Nicu—A Feasibility Study
This feasibility study demonstrates contingency between mothers and their preterm infants' specific behaviors during IDS. These interactions can be analyzed through video segments with high inter-rater agreement. The method described might help in evaluating other modalities that might be related to contingency. Recent advances in AI can make this tool easier to accomplish, with further studies to evaluate the importance of contingency for child …

Musical interaction in music therapy for depression treatment
Music therapy is efficacious for the treatment of depression. Compared to other psychotherapeutic forms, it allows for the emergence of various modes of mutual interaction, thus enabling multiple channels for emotional expression and fostering therapeutic alliance. Although musical interaction patterns between client and therapist have been regarded as predictors of therapeutic outcome in depression, this has not yet been systematically investiga…
Music for autism
The notion of a connection between autism and music is as old as the first reported cases of autism, and music has been used as a therapeutic tool for many decades. Music therapy holds promise as an intervention for individuals with autism, harnessing their strengths in music processing to enhance communication and expression. While previous randomized controlled trials have demonstrated positive outcomes in terms of global improvement and qualit…
Process-outcome relations in music therapy versus music listening for people with schizophrenia viewed through a mediational model
The analysis could not detect a direct link between helping alliance score and outcome variables. However, the analysis documented a stronger alliance developed in the MT group, a lower dropout rate, as well as higher attendance in treatment. Music-oriented parent counseling to promote improvement in level of parental stress, quality of life and the use of music in everyday life among parents of children with autism
Introduction Music-Oriented Parent Counseling (MOPC) is a clinical way to work with parents, using musical improvisations and listening. This study examined effects of MOPC on level of stress, quality of life perception and daily use of music by the parents of autistic children.Method Fourteen parents of young autistic children received either three MOPC sessions (n = 7) or ten MOPC sessions (n = 7), parallel to either music therapy (MT) or stand…
The LongSTEP approach
Introduction Despite medical advances, preterm birth and neonatal intensive care (NICU) hospitalization are demanding and pose risks for infants and parents. Various music therapy (MT) models have suggested parental singing to promote healthy bonding and development in premature infants, but evidence on long-term effects is lacking.Method We present the theoretical framework and intervention protocol of a resource-oriented MT approach for prematu…
Long-Term Effects of Short-Term Music Therapy for Prison Inmates
For most interventions to reduce criminal recidivism, long-term effects are uncertain. Music therapy has shown effects on possible precursors of recidivism, but direct evidence on long-term effects is lacking. In an exploratory parallel randomized controlled trial, 66 inmates in a Norwegian prison were allocated to music therapy or standard care and followed up over a median of 6 years, using state registry data. Median time to relapse was 5 year…
Music Therapy vs. Music Listening for Negative Symptoms in Schizophrenia
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of music therapy for negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: Randomized, participant- and assessor-blinded, multicenter, controlled trial including patients diagnosed with schizophrenia according to ICD-10 with predominantly negative symptoms, between 18 and 65 years. Participants were randomized to 25 successive weekly individual sessions (excluding holidays, including cancellation by the…
Effects of Live Music Therapy on Autonomic Stability in Preterm Infants
Unbuffered stress levels may negatively influence preterm-infants' autonomic nervous system (ANS) maturation, thus affecting neurobehavior and psycho-emotional development. Music therapy (MT) is an evidence-based treatment modality in neonatal care. When coupled with skin-to-skin care (SSC), it may reduce stress responses in both preterm infants and their parents and enhance family-centered care. Accordingly, we aimed to compare the effects of co…
Developing consensus description of group music therapy characteristics for persons with dementia
Introduction Group music therapy (GMT) represents a promising person-centered approach facilitating emotional and social interaction and alleviating behavioral and psychological symptoms in people with dementia. The aim of this study is to produce a consensus statement that can inform provision of and research on person-centered group music therapy (GMT) for persons with dementia. Method We used a Delphi consensus procedure of two iterations in w…
Automated Scoring of Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge – A Comparison Between Human and Machine Scoring
To validly assess teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), performance-based tasks with open-response formats are required. Automated scoring is considered an appropriate ap-proach to reduce the resource-intensity of human scoring and to achieve more consistent scor-ing results than human raters. The focus is on the comparability of human and automated scor-ing of PCK for economics teachers. The answers of (prospective) teachers (N=852) to …
