Predicting Persistence and Fadeout Across Multi-Site RCTs of an Early Childhood Mathematics Curriculum Intervention
This study examined predictors of persistence and fadeout across multiple cluster randomized controlled trials that evaluated a preschool mathematics curriculum. We used meta-analytic methods to explore how impacts on student mathematics achievement faded between post-test (i.e., endline) and 1-year follow-up. We found that the magnitude of the impact at post-test was a strong predictor of the 1-year follow-up impact. Contrary to popular theory, …
Associations Between Prenatal Maternal Stress and Infant Resting Brain Activity
Mounting evidence suggests that maternal stress is associated with infants’ brain activity, but the role of maternal stress during pregnancy is not yet understood. The present preregistered investigation examines associations between prenatal maternal stress (physiological and perceived) and infant brain activity at 1 month of age. A sample of diverse mother–infant dyads ( N = 160) participated (55% female; 39% White). Maternal physiological stre…
Why are preschool programs becoming less effective
Public preschool programs are heralded as an effective policy tool for promoting the development and lifelong well‐being of children from low‐income families. Recent preschool evaluations report divergent findings that are consistently weaker than those of famous demonstration programs implemented in the mid‐20th century. We provide potential explanations for these weaker effects, the most compelling of which focuses on improvements in the early …
Relations among Socioeconomic Status, Perceived Stress, and the Home Language Environment
While socioeconomic disparities in the home language environment have been well established, the mechanisms explaining these disparities are poorly understood. One plausible mechanism is heightened stress. The current study investigated whether maternal perceived stress was 1) associated with measures of the home language environment, and 2) mediated the relation between socioeconomic disparities and the home language environment. Data from three…
Fadeout and persistence of intervention impacts on social–emotional and cognitive skills in children and adolescents
Researchers and policymakers aspire for educational interventions to change children's long-run developmental trajectories. However, intervention impacts on cognitive and achievement measures commonly fade over time. Less is known, although much is theorized, about social-emotional skill persistence. The current meta-analysis investigated whether intervention impacts on social-emotional skills demonstrated greater persistence than impacts on cogn…
The effect of unconditional cash transfers on maternal assessments of children’s early language and socioemotional development
Economic disadvantage has often been associated with poorer performance on measures of early childhood development. However, the causal impacts of income on child development remain unclear. The present study uses data from the Baby's First Years randomized control trial to identify the causal impact of unconditional cash transfers on maternal reports of early childhood development. One thousand racially and ethnically diverse mothers residing in…
Child care and family processes
The current study examined whether within-family changes in child care quality and quantity predicted subsequent changes in home environment quality and maternal depression across early childhood (6 to 54 months of age). Data were drawn from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (n = 1239; 77% White; 48% female; data collection from 1991 to 1996), and were analyzed using Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models. Within-famil…
The effect of the Covid‐19 pandemic on infant development and maternal mental health in the first 2 years of life
We investigated how exogenous variation in exposure to the COVID‐19 pandemic during the first year of life is related to infant development, maternal mental health, and perceived stress. Ninety‐three socioeconomically diverse pregnant women were recruited before the pandemic to participate in a longitudinal study. Infants ranged in age at the beginning of lockdown (0–9.5 months old), thus experiencing different durations of pandemic exposure acro…
The Importance of Indigenous Cartography and Toponymy to Historical Land Tenure and Contributions to Euro/American/Canadian Cartography
Indigenous maps are critical in understanding the historic and current land tenure of Indigenous groups. Furthermore, Indigenous claims to land can be seen in their connections via toponymy. European concepts of territory and political boundaries did not coincide with First Nation/American Indian views, resulting in the mistaken view that Natives did not have formal concepts of their territories. And Tribes/First Nations with cross-border territo…
Maps Showing Sinixt Territory, 1811–46
It is increasingly important to identify the aboriginal boundaries between the time of first European contact and British sovereignty. A number of maps bearing on the location of the Sinixt Tribe’s aboriginal territory of the Arrow Lakes Tribe (sn’ʕay’ckstx or Sinixt) were drafted between 1811 (date of first contact) and 1846 (date of regional sovereignty as a result of the Treaty of Oregon). These maps demonstrate that European interlopers into …
American Indian History on Trial
"Drawing from forty-five years of experience, E. Richard Hart elucidates the use of history as expert testimony in American Indian tribal litigation. Such lawsuits deal with aboriginal territory; hunting, fishing, and plant gathering rights; reservation boundaries; water rights; federal recognition; and other questions that have a historical basis. The methodology necessary to assemble successful expert testimony for tribes is complex and demandi…

Return of the Water Horse
Public sector work in history can have major impacts: determining ownership of beds and banks of large navigable lakes and rivers, which in turn may result in hundreds of millions of dollars of judgments; but determining the ultimate disposition of an old Indian dug-out canoe can be the most rewarding of tasks
The Continuing Saga of Indian Land Claims
During the twenty years between 1970 and 1990 the Zuni Tribe of New Mexico made several major claims relative to their aboriginal land and the interests they hold in that land. They claimed title to some lands, interests in other lands-a sixty-mile easement for a quadrennial religious pilgrimage, for example-and damages as a result of lands permanently lost to them. As a result of their demands for justice, three pieces of legislation were passed…
The Continuing Saga of Indian Land Claims
The Coeur d'Alene Tribe, known as Schee-chu-umsh in their own Interior Salish language, had an aboriginal territory of about 4million acres, which included the centrally located Lake Coeur d'Alene, the Coeur d'Alene River, and the St. Joe River2 (Figure The lakes and rivers within tribal territory were integral to the tribe's cultural survival. Throughout their history, tribal members depended on their lakes and rivers for physical and spiritual …
