Leader and Peer Influence
This study explores the impact of corruption-free and corrupt behaviors of leaders and peers, on civil servants’ perception of their motivation to serve the public. We conducted a vignette experiment with 1,321 civil servants in the Kyrgyz Republic. The results present an asymmetric feature of civil servants’ perceptions: on average, leaders’ and peers’ corrupt behaviors decrease civil servants’ motivation, whereas their corruption-free behaviors…
Adolescents’ Risky Online Behaviors and Social Desirability Bias in Vietnam
This study quantified the prevalence of two risky online behaviors among adolescents in Vietnam: online privacy disclosure and online pornography use. We conducted a field experiment with 1,313 junior high school students aged 13–15 years in Hoa Binh city. In addition to conventional direct questions, we employed list experiments to address social desirability bias in the students’ responses. The results indicated that 49.9% of the adolescents en…

Gender inequalities persist across various domains where traditional social norms are deeply ingrained. This study examines gendered perceptions of career decision‐making autonomy in the Philippines through self‐determination, social role, and gender congruity theories. We conducted a vignette experiment with 1, 421 respondents in rural Sri Lanka. We find that village residents perceive: (1) leaders’ unethical conduct discourages residents’ intention to enga…

Tax compliance and social desirability bias of taxpayers
Identifying taxpayers who engage in noncompliant behaviour is crucial for tax authorities to determine appropriate taxation schemes. However, because taxpayers have an incentive to conceal their true income, it is difficult for tax authorities to uncover such behaviour (social desirability bias). Our study mitigates the bias in responses to sensitive questions by employing the list experiment technique, which allows us to identify the characteris…
Personal social capital and voluntary participation in the Village Development Programme in rural Sri Lanka
This study examines whether voluntary participation in the Village Development Programme in rural Sri Lanka promotes personal social capital. We use an original survey of 595 households in six rural villages in Kalutara district, Sri Lanka, and apply matching methods. The analysis finds a positive effect of voluntary participation on personal social capital. However, once we consider the degree of participation by classifying participants into no…
When do people become more willing to pay taxes? The effects of government spending information on the public’s willingness to pay taxes
Governments coordinate people’s various interests through budget allocations for the provision of the public goods and services. In order for governments to maintain their budgetary power, it is important to secure revenues and increase people’s willingness to pay taxes. To understand whether government measures exert any influence on the willingness of individual taxpayers to pay taxes, we conducted a survey experiment that varied the informatio…
