  • Tense in Adjuncts Part 1: Relative Clauses

    Open Access•Arnim Von Stechow, Atle Grønn•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Part 1 of Tense in Adjuncts presents a compositional analysis of tense in relative clauses (RCs). The languages under investigation are English, Russian, and Japanese. We introduce the syntax and semantics of tense and the theory of feature transmission under variable binding, which mediates between syntax/semantics and morphology. In sequence of tense languages such as English, the morphology of the tense in a RC will be licensed by a non-local …

  • Tense in Adjuncts Part 2: Temporal Adverbial Clauses

    Open Access•Arnim Von Stechow, Atle Grønn•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Part 1 of this article treats tense in relative clauses in English, Russian and Japanese. The temporal center in relative clauses can always be anaphoric, and sometimes it has to be the anaphoric Tpro. In Part 2, we investigate tense in temporal adverbial clauses (TACs) headed by 'after', 'before' and 'when'. We argue for the following points: 1. English TAC Tense is bound in Present adjuncts under matrix 'will', in other constructions the TAC Te…

  • Complement Tense in Contrast: The SOT parameter in Russian and English

Open Access•Atle Grønn, Arnim Von Stechow•ARTICLE•Oslo Studies in Language•2010•Cited by: 2

In an SOT-language like English, ‘past under past’ may have a simultaneous interpretation, i.e., we have temporal agreement. In a non-SOT language like Russian, we only have the shifted interpretation. In English, the temporal morphology of the embedded verb is determined by the matrix tense via a binding chain through verbal quantifiers such as ‘say’ or ‘think’. In Russian, these attitude verbs break the binding chain. The morphology of the embe…

  • The temporal degree adjectives früh(er)/spät(er) ‘early(er)’/’late(r)’ and the semantics of the positive

    Arnim Von Stechow•CHAPTER•Quantification, definiteness, and…•2009

There is a rich literature about the temporal conjunctions before/after, but at the time I gave the talk that underlies this chapter I was not aware of any analysis of the temporal comparatives früher/später ‘earlier/later’, which may be used to express similar states of affairs, but are constructed differently.

  • Pluractional Adverbials

    Beck, S Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2007

This paper investigates the semantics of adverbials like ‘page by page’ and ‘stone upon stone’. An analysis is developed in which sentences containing such adverbials have a pluractional semantics; that is, pluralization affects simultaneously the event- and the individual-argument slot of a predicate. Sternefeld's (1998) system of plural operators is used and extended for this purpose. The adverbial constrains the relation that is pluralized and…

  • Dog after dog revisited

Open Access•Beck, Sigrid Beck et al.•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2006

This paper presents a compositional semantic analysis of pluractional adverbial modifiers like 'dog after dog' and 'one dog after the other'. We propose a division of labour according to which much of the semantics is carried by a family of plural operators. The adverbial itself contributes a semantics that we call pseudoreciprocal

  • Wh-Scope Marking

Uli Lutz, Gereon Müller et al.•BOOK•Wh-Scope Marking•2000

This volume is the first comprehensive overview of the syntax and semantics of wh-scope marking. Wh-scope marking constructions have recently received a lot of attention; their very existence and their intricate properties have important consequences for syntax, semantics, and the syntax–semantics interface (e.g., with respect to the wh-criterion, the wh-movement parameter, feature checking, the theory of locality, the interpretation of wh-phrase…

  • How are results represented and modified? Remarks on Jäger & Blutner's anti-decomposition

    Open Access•Arnim Von Stechow•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2000

The paper investigates a recent proposal to resultativity by G. Jäger and R. Blutner (J&B). J&B say that the representation of result states of accomplishments by means of CAUSE and BECOME is not correct and should not be done in the syntax in terms of decomposition. They develop an axiomatic approach where each accomplishment/achievement is related to its result by a particular axiom. Modification of the result by "again" makes use of these axio…

  • The different readings of wieder 'again': A structural account

    Arnim Von Stechow•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•1996

I will defend a purely structural account of the different readings arising from the German adverb wieder ‘again’. We will be concerned with the so-called repeave/resritutive ambiguity. The claim is that the ambiguity can be resolved entirely in terms of syntactic scope The theory assumes a rather abstract syntax. In particular, abundant use is made of Kratzer's (1994) voice phrase, which plays a central role for the derivation of repetitive read…

The different traditions of linguistics, philosophy of language and philosophical logic converged in the paradigm of truth conditional semantics, which now plays a central role in the cognitive sciences. From empirical research in particular languages more principal questions arise of how the…

  • Adjuncts, attitudes and aspect: Some additions to a tense theory for Russian

Open Access•Atle Grønn, Arnim Von Stechow•ARTICLE•Oslo Studies in Language•1970•References: 3

Compared to other languages, the temporal organisation in Russian relative clauses and temporal adverbial clauses is as simple as it can possibly be: The tense morphology is licensed locally and the adjunct tense and matrix tense are independent of each other. It is tempting to give a purely deictic analysis of adjunct tense in Russian. However, there are some exceptions to the deictic story, the most important one being adjunct tense embedded un…
