Popular Sufism in Eastern Europe: Sufi Brotherhoods and the Dialogue with Christianity And 'Heterodoxy'
This is a detailed description of the various Sufi orders and movements which entered into the Balkans, the Crimean peninsula and other parts of Eastern Europe following the Ottoman conquests. Many of the Sufis came from Christian societies, principally from an Eastern Orthodox background, but others, such as the Bosnians, from churches that were accused or suspected of heterodoxy of belief and of antinomianism. These beliefs, together with pre-C…

Sufi Mystics of the Niger Desert. Sidi Mahmud and the Hermits of Air
From Asia to Africa: The Tuḥfat al-Albāb by Abū Ḥāmid al-Gharnāṭī (473/1080-565/1169) as a source for the chronology and content of the Sīrat ՙAntar b. Shaddād
The Sīrat YAntar conceals within its narrative identifiable literary sources. This is especially so in those sections which describe the adventures of the ՙAbsī hero in Byzantium, Italy, al-Andalus, ՙUmān, Egypt and Ethiopia. Its I use of such sources is without parallel in the sister siyar. Though the fact was not ignored by Bernhard Heller or by Rudi Paret, it is insufficiently appreciated elsewhere, especially in the Arab world itself. So perva…
Sufi Mystics of the Niger Desert
Ṣūfī Mystics of the Niger Desert
This book is a study of the evidence that exists to this day in the Niger Republic, and in the adjacent regions of Saharan and non-Saharan Africa, about the life of Sīdī Mahmūd al-Baghdādī, who, it is believed, introduced new doctrines of Oriental Sufism into the Aïr Massif during the sixteenth century. The teachings of Sīdī Mahmūd were to reappear recently in the Khalwatiyya Sūfī order (tariqa) in Niger. They are still important for contemporary…
Ṣūfī mystics of the Niger desert: Sīdī Maḥmūd and the hermits of Aïr
This study examines the evidence that exists in the Niger Republic, and in the adjacent regions of Saharan and non-Saharan Africa, about the life of Sidi Mahmud al-Baghdadi, who, it is believed, introduced new doctrines of Oriental Sufism into the Air Massif during the 16th century.
The Daghūghiyyūn Sharīfs and Scholars of the Family of al-Ḥājj Settle in the Central Sahara
This chapter discusses the important influence of the Sharīfian Daghūghiyyūn amongst the Sūfīs of the Central Sahara in the late medieval period. One of the scholars, al-Hājj Abū'l-Hudā al-Sūqī, was amongst the chief followers of Sī Mahmū. Also, two extracts from his writings appear as quotations in the very heart of the text of the Qudwa.
Sīdī Maḥmūd in history and myth
Sīdī Mahmūd was a historical figure in Aïr. His life conforms to patterns of sanctity within the Saharan and in the Maghribī, Islamic Tradition. This conclusion discusses the historicity of Sīdī Mahmūd and the element of the miraculous in his personality. It also highlights his legacy to the Sūfīsm of the southern Saharan regions.
The Mir'āt al-Ṭālibīn , by Zain al-Dīn al-Khawāfī of Khurāsān and Herat
Muhammad b. Muhammad b. ‘Alī Abū Bakr al–Khawāfī al–Harāwī was born in Khurāsān in 757/1356 and he died at Herat in 838=1435. Praised by Jāmī as one who personified wisdom, both exoteric and esoteric, he was, without doubt, an important master of the Suhrawardiyya Sūfī order, though he established his own silsila , the Zainiyya . None the less, he was schooled in a number of other Sūfī orders. Dr. Leonard Lewisohn has revealed in his studies of t…

The rediscovery of the ancient sagas of the Banū Hilāl
The last ten years have seen a remarkable increase in the number of published studies about the Sīrat Banī Hilāl , or, to borrow the term used by francophone specialists from the Maghrib as well as from France itself, La Geste hilalienne . The subject matter and the approach of these specialists has been varied. Their interests have focused on the myriad plots of the narrative of the sīra, the imagery employed, the performance of the shā ‘ir and …

Znāga Islam during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries
The gibla, the south-west of Mauritania, is a monotonous region of gum acacia trees, baobabs, 'dead' dunes, and hillocks. This 'backwood' is the last refuge of Znāga Berber, once spoken far to the north in whole regions of the Western Sahara. A number of short poems, a cycle of folk-tales, and a handful of masterpieces of extended odes in praise of the Prophet-some 200 years old and written in Arabic script-this is the meagre literary legacy of a…
New Evidence on the Life of ‘Abdullāh B. Yāsīn and the Origins of the Almoravid Movement
The Qāḍli ‘Iyāḍ in his biography of ‘Abdullāh b. Yāsīn confirms many details in al-Bakri's record of the rise of the Almoravids. His account differs in a few important respects, and furnishes new information which is valuable in reassessing the life of ‘Abdullāh b. Yāsīn. Since no insular ribāṭ is mentioned, its historicity is increasingly suspect, and in the light of Ma gh ribī cosmological ideas it is better regarded as a myth, and not as a his…

Yemenis in the Western Sahara
When I visited Mauritania in 1960 I expected to find similarities between the culture of the West Saharan societies and that indigenous to Southern Arabia. I was not disappointed. Amidst the distinctive regional culture of the Moors there are certain traits which are difficult to explain solely by an independent evolution in a remote, yet similar, environment. Professor R. B. Serjeant, himself a specialist in Southern Arabia, was also struck by t…

The scholars who are descendants of Muhammad Aqīt b. 'Umar b. 'Alī b. Yahyā al-Ṣanhājī, and who include Aḥmad Baba al-Tinbuktī, are rightly regarded as being among the greatest in the medieval Sudan. Yet, in part due to the fact that the mosque and quarter of Sankuray were the focal point of their scholastic endeavours and in part due to the vague use of the geographical expression Takrūr, which included, as an appendage, areas northwards to the …

IT is strange that Shaykh Abti 'Abdallah Muhammad Ibn Battutah, one of greatest of Muslim travellers, should have delayed his ajor visit to Spain until latter part of his career. He was born in Tangier, within sight of Spanish coast, on 24 February 1304 and he died in 1368/69, in Morocco, the best of countries, for in it fruits are plentiful and running water and nourishmg food are never exhausted

The Early Islamic Settlement in Gibraltar
THE PERIOD BETWEEN THE LANDING of Tariq b Ziyad at Gibraltar in A.D. 7I I and the construction of the city of Madinat al-Fath by the Almohade ruler 'Abd al-Mu'min in A.D. I I60 is one of the most unknown and baffling periods in the history of the peninsula. The lack of archaeological material only serves to increase the mystery. Literary evidence is scanty, theories are wild and improbable, and it is not surprising that information in the guide-b…
