  • The humanity of the non-human –– Themes of artificial subjectivity in Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun

    Open Access•Oliver Li, Johan Eddebo•ARTICLE•New Techno Humanities•2023

In this article we discuss themes of artificial subjectivity in Ishiguro's novel Klara and the Sun. We first present a thematic overview, and some reflections upon subjectivity. The analysis proceeds in four steps pertaining to perspectives on artificial subjectivity and the narrative construction of human dignity: (1) who is human, (2) where does the heart lie, (3) the dialectical creation of the heart, and (4) reflections on subjectivity and pe…

  • Re-creating the world - On necessary features for the creation of AGI

    Open Access•Oliver Li•ARTICLE•New Techno Humanities•2023

In this paper I identify and discuss a number of features that I argue are necessary for the realization of AGI. As a preliminary step, common definitions of AGI are presented in respect to their understanding of mind, intelligence, and consciousness. I show that, despite the amazing performance of artificial systems, at present they are still far from exhibiting AGI, and I identify some of their central short-comings. Secondly, inspired by resea…

  • Artificial General Intelligence and Panentheism

    Open Access•Oliver Li•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2023

In this article, I argue that given the possibility and prospect of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), panentheism, as a form of theism with a stronger emphasis on the immanence of God, parallels the anti-anthropocentrism implied by AGI. I discuss some general issues related to the categorization of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Next, both anthropomorphism and anthropocentrism will be discussed as concepts for how humans may relate to AI. Sub…

  • Panentheism in the Light of Mathematical Understandings of Infinity and Connectedness

    Open Access•Oliver Li•ARTICLE•Theology and Science•2021

This paper investigates some consequences of a mathematical understanding of infinity and connectedness for a panentheistic conception of God. Given the existence of God and an understanding of the world in terms of the finite, countable infinity, or uncountable infinity I argue, (a) that a panentheistic conception of God is supported given a mathematical understanding of the infinite, (b) that by applying the notion of uncountable infinity and t…

  • Problems with “Friendly AI”

    Open Access•Oliver Li•ARTICLE•Ethics and Information Technology•2021

On virtue ethical grounds, Barbro Fröding and Martin Peterson recently recommended that near-future AIs should be developed as ‘Friendly AI’. AI in social interaction with humans should be programmed such that they mimic aspects of human friendship. While it is a reasonable goal to implement AI systems interacting with humans as Friendly AI, I identify four issues that need to be addressed concerning Friendly AI with Fröding’s and Peterson’s unde…
