Preliminary Results of the Archaeological Study of the Taye-1 Quarry Settlement in the Baraba Forest-Steppe in 2024
This paper presents the first results of a geoarchaeological study of the periphery of the Taye-1 Quarry settlement located at the intersection of the hollow-wavy watershed country and the lake-like extension of the left bank of the Tartas River known as the “Taye Tract” on topographic maps. Since 2017, the West Siberian Archaeological Expedition has been working at the site and discovered an Early Neolithic ritual complex, production and residen…
The Kushevat Site and the Paleogeographic Context of the Initial Peopling of Northern Urals
The Kushevat Site and the Paleogeographic Context of the Initial Peopling of Northern Urals
On the basis of new materials excavated in 2019–2021 from the Upper Paleolithic site of Kushevat, this study addresses the problem of initial human occupation of the Subpolar Urals. Geological and geomorphological fi ndings are presented along with new chronological and paleogeographical data. Archaeological and faunal materials are described, and result s of the traceological analysis of reindeer antlers with cut and chop marks are presented. Th…
New Evidence of the Late Neopleistocene Peopling of the Lower Ob Valley
Results of Field Archaeological Studies at the Komudvany Terminal Paleolithic Site in 2021
The authors present the results of 2021 field archaeological research carried out in at the Komudwanу Terminal Paleolithic site located in the estuarine part of the Manya river (Oktyabrsky District of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug). The research was directed to study the geomorphological and geological features in the vicinity of the site, to specify the stratigraphic position of the cultural layers and to get new archaeological materials. Th…
Exploration Works on the Right Bank of the Ob River in 2021
The article describes the results of exploration works in the lower reaches of the Ob (Shuryshkarsky district of the YNAO) in 2021. The coastline of the right bank of the Ob was studied in three main areas: near the villages of Khashgort, Kushevat and the Sormas channel. In total, 13 pits and 2 excavation trenches were made with a total area of 70 sq. m. The coastline near the village of Khashgort revealed paleofaunal materials and stone artifact…
Assimilation of the Lower Ob in the Late Pleistocene According to Archeological Data
Archaeological sites indicate the assimilation of the Lower Ob region by humans during the Upper Paleolithic. Modern paleogeography reconstructions testify to the possibility of settlement in this area from the MIS 3, however all stone assemblages found in situ were dated to the end of the Upper Paleolithic - the end of MIS 2. Purpose. Analyze the relationships of Lower Ob Paleolithic sites with the Upper Paleolithic industries in the adjacent ar…
New Evidence of the Late Neopleistocene Peopling of the Lower Ob Valley
This study focuses on the early human occupation of the arctic part of the West Siberian Plain and introduces the finds at the Paleolithic site Kushevat (Shuryshkarsky District, Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug), discovered in 2020. Geological and geomorphological characteristics of the Lower Ob region are provided, the chronology of the key Middle and Late Neopleistocene sequences is assessed, and criteria underlying the search for Paleolithic site…
Site catchment analysis of Eneolithic-medieval settlements in the Central Baraba Lowland
Human and Mammoth Fauna in the North of the Ob Basin in the Late Neopleistocene
Data on the Pleistocene megafauna and the earliest evidence of the presence of Palaeolithic humans on the territory of the Northern Ob river region are analyzed. The data about the geological and geomorphological situation in the lower reaches of the Ob river is presented, the deposits of the Late Neopleistocene are characterized, and the main regularities in the taphonomy of megafaunal remains are described. Changes in the species composition of…

Geological, Geomorphological, and Paleontological Indicators for Detecting Paleolithic Sites in the Lower Ob Region
Spatial Distribution of Burial Grounds of the Early Bronze Age–Middle Ages in the Central Baraba Lowland

Archaeological Excavations at the Galkina-1 Site in Yenisei District of Krasnoyarsk Region in 2018
Testing the perspectives for discovery of the Paleolithic sites in the northern portion of the Ob river valley
Geomorphology and Quaternary Sediments at Archaeological Sites near Anzhevka, Krasnoyarsk Territory
Archaeological and geomorphological studies at several sites near the village of Anzhevka contribute to the understanding of the cultural and chronological situation in the region during the Quaternary. They are especially relevant to intermediate regions such as the Kansk-Rybinsk Basin situated between the Baikal, Angara, and Yenisei drainages. Rescue excavations near Kansk on the right bank of the Kan River in 2015 yielded numerous fi nds relat…
Geoinformation Modeling of Environments Favorable for Prehistoric Humans of the Altai Mountains
Geoinformation technologies are applied to an analysis of the living environments of Paleolithic people, using a territory along the route of a future gas pipeline planned for construction in the Altai Mountains as an example. GIS modeling of a paleoenvironment is based on the notion of a paleolandscape's geological and morphological framework. The SRTM digital model of terrain, and geological maps of scale 1: 200,000 were used. The main factors …
On the Supposedly Young age of Angara Alluvial Sediments Based on the Findings of Salvage Excavations in the Flooding Area of the Boguchany Hydroelectric Plant
Based on the stratigraphy of Paleolithic sites on the northern Angara, the Upper Pleistocene and Holocene history of the region is reconstructed. Findings of recent salvage excavations in the Boguchany flooding zone as well as the evidence of Quaternary geology, geomorphology, neotectonics, and archaeology jointly disprove the “young Angara” model proposed by G.I. Medvedev and other “geoarchaeologists.” The principal event postulated by that mode…
C Database and Geographic Information System for Western Siberia
We illustrate here the combined use of geographic information system (GIS) technology and a radiocarbon database for analysis of the environmental components and ancient sites in Western Siberia during the period 10–45 ka bp. In total, 230 14 C dates from 75 Late Pleistocene outcrops and Paleolithic sites were used to generate paleolandscape maps and to establish the features of the spatiotemporal distribution of Paleolithic sites
