We measured the biological activities of a selected sample (84 crude extracts) of 24 species eaten by wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Kibale National Park, western Uganda, to assess their potential chemotherapeutic values. Antibacterial, antimalarial, and/or antileishmania activities were observed in some crude extracts, and five of these extracts showed a significant cytotoxicity against human tumor cells. Open Access•André Marez, Bruno Simmen et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2005•References: 20

Although studies of humans in a state of hunger or satiety show variations in hedonic responsiveness (preference/aversion) to sugar, the taste recognition thresholds for different substances appear to be stable individual characteristics, as Pangborn, beginning in 1959, observed on a small sample of human subjects. However, a recent study suggests that caloric deprivation is associated with increasing taste sensitivity (as defined by the recognit…

A study of food preferences of the indigenous peoples of Arctic Yakutia was conducted on a population sample consisting of 102 Evens, 52 Yakuts and 22 Chukchis. Responses recorded on analogue scales corresponding to 69 food items have been supplemented by blind tests concerning the perception of solutions of sucrose, sodium chloride, and PROP, to determine hedonic responses to salt and to sucrose (sweet likers vs. sweet dislikers) and the PROP st…

In various environments where primates are presently observed, as well as in forests and savannas which have been inhabited by australopithecines and early hominids, there are (or there have been presumably) categories of substances eliciting taste signals associated with stereotyped responses. Such is the case for various soluble sugars of fruits and nectars, attracting consumers, and for several plant compounds in which bitter or strongly astri…

  • Taste perception and feeding behavior in nonhuman primates and human populations

Open Access•Claude‐marcel Hladik, Claude Marcel Hladik et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•1996

Recent advances in taste physiology provide evidence against the traditional “western” notion that there are only four basic tastes. Each substance elicits a singular “signature” on the peripheral taste nerve, but in some cases the signals form separate clusters within the continuum of taste perceptions. We will discuss the taste abilities of nonhuman primates in terms of threshold and above-threshold responses to potential foods. As diets have e…

Division of labor" has traditionally been regarded as an exclusively human economic institution. Serious consideration of the possibility that incipient forms of labor division may occur in various primate species has been hampered by the conviction that its present expression and prehistoric origin are linked only to human ancestry and society and that it is therefore not susceptible to cross-species analysis. Now that sex differences in the per…

    Open Access•David J Chivers, Claude‐marcel Hladik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Morphology•1980

Three categories of dietary adaptation are recognized— faunivory , frugivory , and folivory —according to the distinctive structural and biochemical features of animal matter, fruit, and leaves respectively, and the predominance of only one in the diets of most species. Mammals subsisting mainly on animal matter have a simple stomach and colon and a long small intestine, whereas folivorous species have a complex stomach and/or an enlarged caecum …
