Latent profiles of effort roles and their impact on task experience and behavior
The experience of effort is a decisive factor for engagement and behavior. However, exerting effort can yield vastly diverse experiences. We posit that these differences are due to distinct configurations of different roles of effort for self-regulation (instrument, reward, adding value to an outcome), and are influenced by task context (entertaining/learning). Furthermore, we investigate how these profiles of effort roles affect the decision to …
Effects of jump training on power, strength, balance and aerobic performance in non-exercising young adults
Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for noncommunicable diseases and associated mortality. A high-intensity jump training has proven to be efficient in counteracting inactivity related declines in physical function during two months of bed rest. In the present study, we tested the effects of such a training program under real-life conditions. Seventy-five young adults (38 female, 23 ± 3 years) were randomly assigned to either a training or…
A complex systems view on physical activity with actionable insights for behaviour change
Assessing and exploring self-enacted behavior change techniques
Self-enactable behavior change techniques (Knittle et al., 2020), are active components of interventions that individuals can also employ on their own. The study explored the frequency of self-enactable behavior change techniques (SE-BCTs) usage, their psychometric structure, and their association with physical activity and healthy nutrition. To evaluate SE-BCTs, Abraham & Michie’s (2008) 26-BCT taxonomy was translated into a SE-BCT questionnaire…

Satisfying the Need for Relatedness Among Teachers
The satisfaction of teachers’ need for relatedness is an important pre-condition for teachers’ wellbeing. Receiving social support plays an important role in satisfying the need for relatedness. Following job crafting theory, the present study aims to examine (1) whether searching for social support results in an increase in the satisfaction of the need for relatedness and (2) whether this effect is mediated by an increase of received social supp…
Hours on the Run—Does Boredom Matter for Ultra-Endurance Athletes’ Crises
Sport and exercise can be boring. In the general population, thinking of sports as boring has been linked to exercising less. However, less is known about the role of boredom in people who participate in ultra-endurance competitions: Do these athletes also associate their sports with boredom, and does boredom pose a self-regulatory challenge that predicts if they encounter a crisis during an ultra-endurance competition? Here, we investigate these…
School principals’ social support and teachers’ basic need satisfaction
Many teachers report high levels of occupational stress. Teachers' basic need satisfaction is essential for teachers' well-being at work. Social support from school principals is assumed to play an important role for teachers' basic need satisfaction. However, the underlying mechanisms of the relationship between social support from school principals and teachers' basic need satisfaction are mostly unknown. Previous research suggests that job dem…
Dual-Focused Transformational Leadership, Teachers’ Satisfaction of the Need for Relatedness, and the Mediating Role of Social Support
Basic psychological need satisfaction is essential for the wellbeing of teachers and motivation at work. Transformational leadership contributes to the development and maintenance of a respectful, constructive atmosphere, a supportive working climate, and has been suggested to be a crucial factor for the satisfaction of the need for relatedness of employees. Transformational leadership is also considered as an ideal leadership style in the school…

Too Much of a Good Thing? Exercise Dependence in Endurance Athletes
(1) Background: A large body of research has examined the positive effects of physical activity on physical and mental health. However, for some, excessive exercise can develop into an addiction that is detrimental to their health. In the present study, we examine potential personal (self-control, self-concordance) and social (social support) resources that we assume to be related to exercise dependence. (2) Methods: One hundred and forty athlete…
Teachers’ perceived time pressure, emotional exhaustion and the role of social support from the school principal
Many teachers experience high levels of work-related strain due to time pressure, which over time can lead to various health problems, such as emotional exhaustion. However, there is growing evidence that this could be a reciprocal effect. Moreover, it is known that perceived social support can buffer the negative effects of stress, such as time pressure, on health outcomes. Less is known about buffering effects of received social support. Based …
Imaging Human Breast Tumours in Different Species
In a gedankenexperiment, we pose the philosophical question as to whether human breast cancer cells or tissues can still be considered human after transplantation into another species. Alongside medical research images illustrating xenotransplantation, we provide descriptions of how tissues were prepared for imaging. In addition, we discuss how such models enable further understanding of cancer and provide invaluable tools for testing new therapi…
Implicit Theories about Athletic Ability Modulate the Effects of If-Then Planning on Performance in a Standardized Endurance Task
Muscular strength has a strong positive impact on cardiometabolic health and fitness. However, building up strength endurance requires effortful exercises. From a health perspective, it is important to understand which psychological strategies help people deal with straining exercise. Self-regulation strategies like if-then planning (also known as implementation intentions) appear particularly promising because they might directly alter how peopl…
High Boredom Proneness and Low Trait Self-Control Impair Adherence to Social Distancing Guidelines during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Social distancing during the coronavirus-disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is crucial to reduce the spread of the virus. However, its effectiveness hinges on adherence by individuals who face substantial burdens from the required behavioral restrictions. Here, we investigate sources of individual variation in adhering to social distancing guidelines. In a high-powered study ( N = 895), we tested direct and indirect effects of boredom and self-cont…
Implicit motives and basic psychological needs
The present article starts with discussing similarities and differences between conceptualizations of human needs in self‐determination theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan [1985], Intrinsic motivation and self‐determination in human behavior ; Deci & Ryan [2000], Nebraska symposium on motivation: Perspectives on motivation ) and motive disposition theory (MDT; McClelland, Human motivation , 1985). The second section focuses on the two‐process model of psych…

Do Some People Need Autonomy More Than Others? Implicit Dispositions Toward Autonomy Moderate the Effects of Felt Autonomy on Well‐Being
The present studies examined whether implicit or explicit autonomy dispositions moderate the relationship between felt autonomy and well‐being. Study 1 ( N = 187 undergraduate students) presents an initial test of the moderator hypothesis by predicting flow experience from the interaction of autonomy need satisfaction and autonomy dispositions. Study 2 ( N = 127 physically inactive persons) used vignettes involving an autonomy (un)supportive coac…
The Influence of Avoidance Temperament and Avoidance‐Based Achievement Goals on Flow
In the present research, we conducted two studies designed to examine the joint influence of avoidance temperament and avoidance‐based achievement goals on the experience of flow on a creativity task. In both a laboratory study ( N = 101; M age = 22.61, SD age = 4.03; 74.3% female) and a naturalistic study ( N = 102; M age = 16.23, SD age = 1.13; 48% female), participants high in avoidance temperament were shown to experience greater flow when pe…
Avoidance Goal Pursuit Depletes Self‐Regulatory Resources
OBJECTIVE: Research on the strength model of self-regulation is burgeoning, but little empirical work has focused on the link between distinct types of daily goal pursuit and the depletion of self-regulatory resources. The authors conducted two studies on the link between avoidance goals and resource depletion. METHOD: Study 1 (283 [228 female] Caucasians, ages 18-51) investigated the concurrent and longitudinal relations between avoidance goals …
Failure cue priming and impaired cognitive performance—analyses of avoidance motivation as a mediator and fear of failure as a moderator
The present research investigates whether and how learned symbols for failure reduce task performance. We tested the effect of number priming in two countries with different learning histories for numbers. Priming numbers associated with failure (6 in Germany and 1 in Switzerland) were hypothesized to reduce performance. As expected, in Switzerland, priming with the failure number 1 reduced performance (Study 1), whereas in Germany, priming with …

Wanting, having, and needing
Four studies explored the motivational and experiential dynamics of psychological needs, applying both self-determination theory and motive disposition theory. In all 4 studies, motive dispositions toward achievement and affiliation ("wanting" particular experiences) predicted corresponding feelings of competence and relatedness ("having" those experiences). Competence and relatedness in turn predicted well-being, again indicating that these 2 ex…

Baby M and the Politics of Gender
Despite repeated references to Biblical precedents — Hagar, Solomon, Mary — the Baby M script could have been written by Kafka. A contract for a most personal “service” was signed and the court ordered strict performance, couched in the language of freedom, rights and equality. The judge wrote in a universal vein, appealing to pro-life, pro-family, pro-choice slogans. Most lawyers polled said this was classical contract reasoning. Therapists dear…

Educating the passions
