Ritual and Morality: The Ritual Purity System and Its Place in Judaism
Antisemitism and Modernity: Innovation and Continuity
The subject of anti-Semitism, not long ago thought to be a dead issue, has been revised due to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. Maccoby traces the now topical discussion of the origins of Anti-Semitism, and especially its development in the modern world. The key questions that are addressed include: How is it that this medieval prejudice proved so lasting and potent? Are the roots of anti-Semitism religious? If so, how do these r…

The Law About Liquids: A Rejoinder
Jesus' saying, 'First clean the inside' (Mt. 23.25-26), is a metaphor about hypocrisy taken not from the context of ritual purity (as argued by Jacob Neusner), but from that of the ordinary washing of dirty dishes. The ritual purity law concerning the inside and outside of non-earthenware vessels probably did not exist in the time of Jesus, and is in any case unsuitable as a metaphor for hypocrisy. This was argued by me in an earlier article. Joh…
Corpse and Leper
A Pariah People: The Anthropology of Antisemitism
An anthropological study of antisemitism which identifies why strategies for normalising the status of Jews have failed. The role Jews historically played in Christian society is compared to that of the untouchables in India, with claims that the stigma has been reinforced through myth and art
The Corpse in the Tent
On c…
Paul and Hellenism
Paul and the Eucharist
The earliest New Testament account of the institution of the Eucharist is found in 1 Cor 11. 23–30. The first important point to consider is whether Paul is claiming to know about Jesus' eucharistic words through a personal revelation, or through a tradition handed down to him from the leaders of the Jerusalem Church. I shall argue that the view of earlier scholarship (e.g. Loisy and Lietzmann) that Paul is speaking here of a personal vision has …
