  • Seventeenth-century experimenta , magisterial formulae and the ‘animal alkahest ’

    Open Access•Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Márcia H M Ferraz et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2015

In this paper we present three newly rediscovered documents from the Royal Society archives that, together with the four described in our previous publications, constitute a set on a cognate theme. The documents were written by, or addressed to, members of the early Royal Society, and their subject is several magisterial formulae, including J. B. van Helmont's alkahest and Ludus . In addition to the interest in those formulae as medicines for var…

  • Seventeenth-century ‘treasure’ found in Royal Society archives

    Open Access•Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Márcia H M Ferraz et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2014

Our archival researches at the Royal Society reveal that a small envelope attached to a 1675 letter from an Antwerp apothecary, A. Boutens, contained a sample of the ‘ Ludus ’ prepared as a remedy for the ‘stone disease’ then sweeping through Europe, which was first announced in J. B. van Helmont's De lithiasi (1644). After examining the fascination with the medical use of the Ludus (which required the ‘alkahest’ for its preparation) and the tena…

  • Gur, Ghur, Guhr or Bur ? The quest for a metalliferous prime matter in early modern times

    Open Access•Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Márcia H M Ferraz•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2013•References: 6

It has been traditionally held that the idea of a prime matter of metals was abandoned in the eighteenth century, especially after the failure of Hermann Boerhaave to find it in mercury. However, documents tell a different story: the search for the metalliferous principle, in the form of an odd substance known as Gur , Guhr , Ghur or Bur , was very much alive in the 1700s. This was a project that involved Boerhaave himself, as is shown by his cor…

  • From Shelves to Cyberspace

Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Silvia Waisse et al.•ARTICLE•Isis•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 14

History of science as a formal and autonomous field of research crosses over disciplinary boundaries. For this reason, both its production and its working materials are difficult to classify and catalog according to discipline-based systems of organization of knowledge. Three main problems might be pointed out in this regard: the disciplines themselves are subject to a historical process of transformation; some objects of scientific inquiry resis…

  • Lost Royal Society documents on ‘alkahest’ (universal solvent) rediscovered

Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Márcia H M Ferraz et al.•ARTICLE•Notes and Records the Royal…•2010

Although historians have recently shown a great deal of interest in the early-modern search for the liquor alkahest or universal solvent, early Royal Society discussions of that legendary substance have been ignored, probably because the papers associated with them seemed to have been lost. Three of them have recently been rediscovered in the Society's archives. This article reproduces them for the first time in photographic facsimile with a desc…

  • Raízes históricas da difícil equação institucional da ciência no Brasil

    Open Access•Ana Maria Alfonso-Goldfarb, Márcia H M Ferraz•ARTICLE•São Paulo em Perspectiva•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 2
