Personal Reflections on Terminal Illness after Twenty Years of Teaching a Death and Dying Course
The late L. Eugene Thomas applies his personal experience of facing a terminal illness to the teaching of courses in Death and Dying. He realized that the content of the courses as he taught them had emphasized the human search for meaning in Death. The other part of the course covered the anticipation of severing relationships and the meaning of the loss to those left behind. He found that the first part was easy; the second part was the more di…

Reflections on Death by Spiritually Mature Elders
Beliefs and feelings about death are excerpted from interviews conducted with elderly English men and women, who were viewed as spiritually mature by those in their community. Respondents reported a wide range of beliefs about death, reflecting their personal experience, but none reported fear of death. Subtle sex differences were noted: men tended to picture death in spatial terms, of moving into a new dimension, while women tended to describe d…
Two Patterns of Transcendence: An Empirical Examination of Wilber's and Washburn's Theories
Participant observation and open-ended interviews with Indian and English elderly who were recognized as spiritually mature provided data for evaluating Washburn's claim that a period of egoic regression precedes movement to the transpersonal level. Hermeneutical analysis of interview protocols and research notes indicated that half of those nominated in each sample had reached the transpersonal level, but of these, only about half gave indicatio…

Identity, ideology and medicine: Health attitudes and behavior among Hindu religious renunciates
Correlates of Sexual Interest Among Elderly Men
Interview data were collected from 46 English elderly men (age 70 to 94 years) relating to attitudes, psychological traits, and life satisfaction. Sexual interest was not related to life satisfaction or marital status but was significantly correlated with measures of emotional expressivity, personal identity, as well as regrets about the past. Findings are discussed in terms of Erikson's later stages of ego development
Metaphoric analysis of meaning in the lives of elderly men: A cross-cultural investigation
Incidence of Near-Death and Intense Spiritual Experiences in an Intergenerational Sample: An Interpretation
Incidence of near-death and intense spiritual experiences were determined for a sample of 305 persons ranging in age from seventeen to eighty-five. Near-death experiences were reported by 28 per cent, and intense spiritual experiences by 34 per cent. Incidence of near-death reports did not vary significantly by age of respondents, but elderly respondents were significantly less likely to report intense spiritual experiences. Persons who reported …
Age Norms for Templer's Death Anxiety Scale
Templer's Death Anxiety Scale was administered to 295 adults ranging in age from 16 to 83 yr. Results indicated that older adults (60—83 yr.) had significantly lower scores than younger adults. Users of the scale are cautioned that the age of the individual may be important in interpreting scores, and preliminary age norms are presented
Personality and work environment congruence of mid‐life career changers
This study examines two hypotheses derived from Holland's theory of careers: that persons will move toward work environments more congruent with their personality type, and that persons working in environments highly congruent with their personality will be more satisfied than those whose personality‐environment congruence is low. Personality type of 61 middle‐aged males who had changed from managerial or professional careers was determined by me…
Measurement and Incidence of Mystical Experiences: An Exploratory Study
The study explored types and incidence of intense experiences reported by normal adults. A structured question developed by Greeley (1974) and an open-ended question asking respondents to describe their experiences were completed by 302 young adults. A third of the respondents indicated on the structured item that they had had an intense spiritual experience, a percentage similar to that found by (Creeley with a national sample. Content analysis …
Adolescent Drug Use: An Analysis
In a survey of self-reports to a 60-item questionnaire from 3,348 students in Grades 8 to 12, an increase with age was found in the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and the hallucinogens. Interestingly, the female Ss reported greater use of tobacco from Grades 8 to 11 than males. Alcohol still headed the list of favorite drugs, with 73% of the seniors reporting its use. Adequacy of family communication was negatively associated with drug usage…
Family Correlates of Parent-Child Attitude Congruence: Is it Time to Throw in the Towel
Connell (1972), in an exhaustive review of decades of research on parent-child similarity on political and social attitudes, found that, when methodologically weak studies were eliminated, parent-child correlations were uniformly low. Given this situation, he suggested that the inconclusive nature of research on family factors influencing parent-child attirude similarity (Sigel, 1970) may be due to the fact that the family has not been an importa…
Generational Discontinuity in Beliefs: An Exploration of the Generation Gap 1
Empirical studies indicated little evidence for generational differences on the level of beliefs traditionally referred to as attitudes (see Rokeach's typology). At the intermediate level of beliefs, those concerning authority , there appeared more possibility of generational discontinuity, especially in relation to the legitimacy of national institutions. Although very little research has been done on value orientations , studies of political at…

Political Attitude Congruence between Politically Active Parents and College-Age Children: An Inquiry into Family Political Socialization
One parent and a college-age child were interviewed from sixty white uppermiddle-class families, in which the parent was highly politically active and identified with either liberal or conservative social causes. The sampte contained approximately equal numbers of mothers and fathers and sons and daughters. An analysis of dyadic political attitude agreement suggested that mothers had slightly greater influence on both daughters and sons. An analy…
The I-E scale, ideological bias, and political participation1
This study was undertaken to examine ambiguities in the ability of the I-E scale to predict complex social behavior. An analysis of the items in the I-E scale suggested that the scale might contain a conservative bias Further, it was suggested that responses to the items may be determined by the individual's political and social ideology, which in turn are influenced by the political and social norms to which he has been exposed The sample consis…
