The Children's Treatment of Animals Questionnaire: A Rasch Analysis
The study of human–animal interactions is limited by a paucity of empirically validated measures of humane treatment of companion animals. The current study reports findings from a psychometric analysis of the Children's treatment of animals Questionnaire (CTAQ; thompson and Gullone 2003), an instrument that assesses children's humane interactions with nonhuman animals. Specifically, the current study extends what is known about the psychometric …
Survey Response Rates and Survey Administration in Counseling and Clinical Psychology: A Meta-Analysis
This article reports results of a meta-analysis of survey response rates in published research in counseling and clinical psychology over a 20-year span and describes reported survey administration procedures in those fields. Results of 308 survey administrations showed a weighted average response rate of 49.6%. Among possible moderators, response rates differed only by population sampled, journal in which articles were published, sampling source…
Effects of Item Grouping and Position of the “Don't Know” Option on Questionnaire Response
This study examined the effects of questionnaire item grouping (thematic versus random) and placement of the “don't know” option (before or after the rating scale) on the frequency of nonattitude responses (checking don't know and omission) in rating attitude statements. Response consistency was also evaluated by item grouping. Findings supported the hypothesis that knowledge of an item's theme and of other items related to that theme encouraged …
Development and Validation of a Measure of Resiliency
The purpose of the 4 studies reported here was to develop and provide validation information for a measure of resiliency
The Responsibility Scale: A Research Note on Dissertation Completion
As individuals mature, increasing responsibility is taken for life events, but there is variation in this maturation from one individual to another. These individual differences can be observed in the doctoral candidate's acceptance of responsibility for completing the doctoral dissertation. The Responsibility Scale was completed by 142 graduates and 97 nongraduates (all but dissertations [ABDs]) in a college of education. A principal components …
Effects of Risk Factors on Adolescents' Resiliency and Coping
The relationships among five factors characterized as placing adolescents at risk for behavioral problems such as dropping out of school or drug and alcohol use, and resiliency and coping were evaluated for a sample of 392 students in Grades 7 to 12. Students self-reported to be at-risk differed in scores on resiliency but not in coping from those with no self-reported risk factors

Components of Item Difficulty of Raven's Matrices
The purpose of this study was to identify and test item characteristics that predict the difficulty of items on Raven's Colored Matrices (CPM; 1965) and items on Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM; 1965). CPM item characteristics were defined and rated; Rasch item difficulties were used as the dependent variable, with misfitting items omitted. The multiple R was .90 (.88 using stepwise prediction). When the same predictors were used with …
Psychometric Quality of the Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire as a Measure of Cognitive Style
This study investigated the psychometric quality of the Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire. Analysis indicated the scale was composed of two distinct subscales (visual style and verbal style), not one bipolar scale. While the verbal style subscale predicted verbal ability, the validity of the visual style subscale was not demonstrated. Both subscales should be revised and further study conducted with the visual style subscale

Measuring Attitudes of Teachers Toward Testing
The authors of this article report the development and testing of a measure of teachers' attitudes toward testing and give suggestions for its use by school administrators
Subjective Judgment of Multiple-Choice Item Characteristics
This study was concerned with the reliability and validity of subjective judgments about five characteristics of multiple-choice test items from an introductory astronomy test: (a) item difficulty, (b) language complexity, (c) content importance or relevance, (d) response set convergence, and (e) process complexity. Judgments of item difficulty were the least reliable. Judgments on all characteristics were significantly associated with empirical …
Test Anxiety Level and Test Format Preference
Responses of 100 students to the Test Anxiety Scale were used to classify subjects by level of anxiety. Order of perceived difficulty of test formats from easiest to hardest was multiple-choice, true-false, problem-solving, completion, interpretive exercise, and essay. Preferences for formats were different for groups high and low in anxiety, but no differences in perceived difficulty were noted
Attitudes Toward Self-Care: A Consumer Study
Although self-care is emerging as a growing movement wherein lay persons are assuming more responsibility for prvention, detection and treatment of health problems, we have almost no basic descriptive studies of attitudes toward self-care of professionals and consumers. The present study explored the reliability and validity of an attitude instrument designed to assess consumer's attitudes toward self-care and also its sensitivity to group differ…
