Symlog: A System for the Multiple Level Observation of Groups
The Value Profile: A Factor Analytic Study of Value Statements
The Value Profile is a general purpose inventory of values developed for use in research on interpersonal relations. Eight hundred and seventy-two value statements were collected from tests of values, personality tests, theoretical treatments of values, and statements made by subjects in group discussions. A factor analysis of 143 items representing all value positions yielded four orthogonal factors: I, Acceptance of Authority; II, Need-determin…

Working Papers in the Theory of Action
In the hope of provoking discussion among sociologists, psychologists, philosophers, and psychiatrists interested in social theory, the authors have made available here a set of working papers which constitute an attempt to develop more intensively a systematic theory of action. The papers include discussions of the concept of the superego, the theory of symbolism, and the problem of equilibrium in small groups
Some Findings Relevant to the Great Man Theory of Leadership
breakdowns in communication are but a few of the symptoms of faulty group structure. Evidence of these should be identified in training and either corrected through training or appropriate changes should be made in crew composition. Participation in the activities of a group under survival conditions calls for skills in individual behavior for which all members are not adequately equipped, leading to tension, ineffectiveness, panic and withdrawal…

lem of the selection of materials. Have the responses been selected to illustrate what the leader wants to illustrate? Could other assortings of responses be made to illustrate something else-perhaps the futility of guided group conversation, as the method also has been called? Research on how to make use of transcriptions seems urgently needed. Perhaps investigators with different philosophical and methodological orientations could be induced to…
Phases in group problem-solving
A Set of Categories for the Analysis of Small Group Interaction
Because problems are dimly 'felt,' because they are neither related to a general theory of behavior on the one side, nor rigorously connected with the categories and indices to be chosen for observation on the other, the results of the research can very seldom become part of the cumulative movement of truth which constitutes the growth of scientific knowledge. When concrete indices (and classifications) are not clearly related to the variables of…
