Urinary incontinence is a hidden, private issue that affects over 40% of women. Its experience has been medicalised, mainly through urogynaecological surgery, more recently using implanted synthetic vaginal mesh. In this article, we analyse the power dynamics at play in the US Food and Drug Administration's public hearings on the regulation of mesh. We use grounded theory to analyse verbatim transcripts of two days' hearings in 2011 of a Food and…

  • Guinea Pig Kids

    Leiter, Valerie Leiter et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2014•References: 4

The Tuskegee syphilis study represents a nadir in health research in the U.S., when individuals' bodies were used to satisfy researchers' curiosity with no anticipated clinical benefit. The study is often used as a teaching case, in research methods and biomedical ethics training, symbolizing the past, before the federal government intervened and created human protections regulations to protect participants. The Tuskegee study continues to have o…

  • Moving Out

    Leiter, Valerie Leiter et al.•ARTICLE•Marriage & Family Review•2009•Cited by: 5•References: 45

This article examines the transition to adulthood from a life course perspective, highlighting the experiences of youth with disabilities and the role that families make in that transition. Here, we focus on youth leaving home as a key marker of transition to adulthood and address historical and contemporary trends in leaving home and current influences on youths' residential opportunities. The literature reviewed here helps us to understand how …

  • From Lydia Pinkham to Queen Levitra

    Open Access•Peter Conrad, Leiter et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2008•Cited by: 20•References: 2

The medicalisation of life problems has been occurring for well over a century and has increased over the past 30 years, with the engines of medicalisation shifting to biotechnology, managed care, and consumers. This paper examines one strand of medicalisation during the last century: direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA) of pharmaceuticals. In particular, it examines the roles that physicians and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have playe…

  • Families and Childhood Disabilities

    Open Access•Leiter, Valerie Leiter•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007

Families of children with disabilities experience challenges that other families do not face. They may experience stigma as a result of having a child with a disability and may perform health care and advocacy work for their children beyond that performed by other families. The extent of these additional concerns varies tremendously across families, depending upon the nature and severity of the children's disabilities and the social context in wh…

  • Challenges to Children's Independent Citizenship

    Open Access•Leiter, Valerie Leiter et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2006•Cited by: 5•References: 22

This article explores how recent federal legislation has increased the extent to which US children's citizenship is dependent upon their parents' citizenship, by contrasting children who are adopted internationally by US citizens and second-generation US children. Two interconnected phenomena are examined: (1) the broader material and theoretical relationships between children's membership in families and the state; and (2) the social, political …

  • The Division of Labor Among Systems of Therapeutic Care for Children with Disabilities

    Open Access•Leiter•ARTICLE•Journal of Disability Policy…•2005•Cited by: 2

This article demonstrates that there is a division of labor in therapeutic care for children with disabilities (i.e., physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy) between educational and medical systems, with educational systems providing the bulk of that care. Analyses of the 1994—1995 National Health Interview Survey Disability Follow-back show that the majority of children with disabilities who received therapeutic care (75%) received …

This article explores the issue of requests for additional special education services. In their study, the authors identified which parents of children who receive special education services make claims for additional related services; the barriers these parents report facing in obtaining such services; and the connections among claims, barriers, and parents' satisfaction with educational services. The authors provide a differentiated view of how…

  • The Consequences of Caring

    Open Access•Leiter, Valerie Leiter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Family Issues•2004•Cited by: 32•References: 46

This article broadens our knowledge about family caregiving across the life course by examining caregiving and employment effects experienced by women with children with special needs, using data from a survey conducted in 1998-1999. Almost one fifth of the mothers provide at least 20 hours a week of home health care to these children. More than half of the mothers in the labor force report an employment effect in the form of reducing their hours…

  • The Redemption of Thalidomide

    Open Access•Stefan Timmerman, Leiter•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2000•Cited by: 8

In this paper we examine how a standardized drug distribution system contributed to a therapeutic and symbolic make-over of thalidomide. In the 1960s, thalidomide was seen as a horror drug that caused severe birth defects among over 10,000 babies who were exposed to it in utero. Currently, thalidomide is viewed as a potentially life-saving drug which is being distributed in the USA. We discuss this transformation from a social worlds perspective,…
