  • Gender, Selection into Employment, and the Wage Impact of Immigration

George J Borjas, Anthony Edo•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2026

Natives are expected to respond to the wage impact of immigration by moving across markets. We argue that the observed impact depends not only on the size of the native response but also on which natives choose to respond. Specifically, a nonrandom response produces a selection bias. We document its empirical relevance by showing that the strong feminization of the French immigrant workforce reduced the employment of native women, leading to siza…

  • Wealth and shifting demand pressures on the price level in England after the Black Death

    Open Access•Anthony Edo, Jacques Melitz•ARTICLE•Cliometrica•2023

The scale of the rise in personal wealth following the Black Death calls the life-cycle hypothesis of consumption into consideration. Based on price level evidence, this paper shows for the first time that the wealth effect of the Black Death on economic activity continued in England for generations, up to 1450. Indeed, in the absence of consideration of the wealth effect, other influences on the price level do not even appear in the econometric …

  • An introduction to the economics of immigration in OECD countries

Open Access•Anthony Edo, Lionel Ragot et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Economics/Revue…•2020

The share of the foreign‐born population in member countries of the OECD is increasing, and this article summarizes economics research on the effects of immigration in those nations. Four broad topics are addressed: labour market issues, fiscal questions, the political economy of immigration, and productivity and international trade. Extreme concerns about deleterious labour market and fiscal impacts following from new immigrants are not found to…

  • Immigration and electoral support for the far-left and the far-right

Open Access•Anthony Edo, Yvonne Giesing et al.•ARTICLE•European Economic Review•2019

Immigration is one of the most divisive political issues in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and several other Western countries. We estimate the impact of immigration on voting for far-left and far-right candidates in France, using panel data on presidential elections from 1988 to 2017. To derive causal estimates, we instrument more recent immigration flows by settlement patterns in 1968. We find that immigration increases support …

  • How do rigid labor markets absorb immigration? Evidence from France

    Open Access•Anthony Edo•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 42

This paper investigates how immigration can affect the labor market outcomes of native workers when their wages are rigid. I use a rich dataset for France and decompose the native workers according to whether they are covered by fixed-term or indefinite-term contracts. Indefinite-term contracts are associated with higher wage protection than fixed-term contracts that allow firms to adjust wages as contracts expire. I use an empirical methodology …

  • Selective Immigration Policies and Wages Inequality

Open Access•Anthony Edo, Farid Toubal•ARTICLE•Review of International Economics•2014

We quantify the overall impact of immigration on native wages in F rance from 1990 to 2010. Our short‐run simulations indicate that immigration has decreased native wages by 0.6%. We find on average no impact of immigration on wages in the long run. However, we show that the long‐run effects of immigration on wages are detrimental to high‐skilled native workers and benefits to low‐skilled native workers. Our structural estimation allows us to eva…

Open Access•Anthony Edo, Nicolas Jacquemet•ARTICLE•Economie et Statistique /…•2013•Cited by: 3
