  • Predictors of Cigarette Smoking among Adolescents

    Open Access•J G P Williams, Janice G Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

Cigarette smoking among adolescents was predicted by age, race, involvement in activities with peers and family, peer smoking, family's smoking, and peers' acceptance of smoking. A random sample of 1,826 South Carolina public school students served as subjects. Multiple regression analysis indicated that 43% of the variance in reported cigarette smoking could be explained by these variables. Older, white subjects and subjects with friends and fam…

  • Cluster Analysis of Mmpi Scales of Patients Involuntarily Committed for Chemical Dependency Treatment

    JAMES E HALL, J G P Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1993

This study investigated empirical clusters of MMPI scale T scores for 186 men and 112 women involuntarily committed to a chemical dependency unit of a state psychiatric hospital. Ward's method of cluster analysis produced six clusters which were similar to those reported in other cluster-analytic studies of alcoholics but with a prominent increase in Scale 6 elevations. Average profiles for the six clusters were Spike 6, 6-2-8-4, within normal li…

  • Measuring Drinking Patterns Among College Students

    J G P Williams, Janice G Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1992

Alcohol use among college students is of interest to clinicians and researchers. The results of such studies depend on the quality and nature of the measures used. The literature includes a wide variety of operational definitions of drinking patterns, making difficult comparisons across studies. For 109 men and 83 women attending college this paper provides data on the Drinking Practices Questionnaire, a self-report measure of drinking patterns d…

  • Perceived Problem-Solving Skills and Drinking Patterns among College Students

    Open Access•J G P Williams, Janice G Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

The cognitive social-learning-theory literature on alcohol abuse points to failure to generate appropriate alternative behaviors to drinking as a major predictor of relapse to drinking. Viewing drinking as a continuous variable, ranging from abstinence to abuse, it should be possible to demonstrate a relationship between problem-solving abilities and drinking patterns. The hypothesis that individuals' perceived problem-solving skills are related …

  • Construct Validity of Transactional Analysis Ego States

John E Williams, John Watson et al.•ARTICLE•Transactional Analysis Journal•1983

Transactional Analysis (TA) theory describes personality in terms of the relative strength of five functional ego states. Williams and Williams (1980) have devised a method for assessing ego-state strengths from self descriptions obtained from the Adjective Check List. This paper reports three studies concerned, respectively, with the construct validity of the Free Child, Adult, and Critical Parent scales. In each study, scores of university stud…
