  • Birchbark letters from Veliky Novgorod excavations of the year 2020

    Alexey Gippius•ARTICLE•Voprosy Jazykoznanija•2021

The article is a preliminary publication of fourteen birchbark letters found in Veliky Novgorod during the archaeological season of 2020. With the exception of Nо. 1135 (mid-12th century), the published documents date back to the 14th — first half of the 15th century. Despite the fragmented state of most of the texts, their overall content can be plausibly reconstructed. The most important historically are No. 1122/1123 — a draft of a testament, …

  • Semitic inscriptions in the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod

    Open Access•Alexey A Gippius, Alexey Gippius et al.•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2020

In the present article, we offer a detailed reply to alternative interpretations of our explanation of two eleventh-century phrases inscribed many times on the walls of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod: коуни рони and парехъ мари . According to our previous article in this journal, the phrases have a Semitic origin: Hebrew qūmī ronnī and Syriac /barren̲k mār/, respectively. In both instances new empirical evidence is provided by S. Ju. Temčin…

  • The oldest traces of Semitic (Hebrew and Syriac) in early Rus’

    Open Access•Alexey A Gippius, Alexey Gippius et al.•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2012

In the present article, we argue that two eleventh-century phrases inscribed many times on the walls of the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod (коуни рони and парехъ мари) are of Semitic provenance. We will provide the linguistic arguments which support the claim of a Hebrew source for коуни рони and a Syriac one for парехъ мари. In addition, we offer a reconstruction of the historical pragmatic context in which the phrases can be situated. We will…

  • On direct speech and referential perspective in birchbark letters no. 5 from Tver’ and no. 286 from Novgorod

    Open Access•Alexey A Gippius, Alexey Gippius et al.•ARTICLE•Russian Linguistics•2011

This article analyses within a pragmaphilological framework the communicative function and linguistic form of birchbark letters no. 5 from Tver’ (Tv5) and no. 286 from Novgorod (N286), both dating back to the 14th century. In the case of Tv5, we propose that the letter can best be understood if we assume two instances of direct speech without any markers of reportedness. With regard to N286, we will argue that what seems to be another case of dir…
