Creative rewritings of critical texts
Transports of Translation
Along with the numerous cultural, religious or political functions of translation (establishing religious authority or nation-building, for instance, as with the King James Version of the Bible), along with its didactic use in language-learning and its intercultural one in aesthetic transmission and appropriation, translation can also play a healing role. Bi- or plurilingual speakers and language students often experience difficulties of various …
Mother Tongue
The following poems can be read in connection with the research on the many-faceted subject of the mother tongue, especially as it helps or hinders second language learners, that I have conducted with Monique De Mattia-Viviès over the past few years. The first poem has to do with transmission, and with children who find themselves the champions of other people’s causes – causes which were themselves perhaps transmitted. Speech disorder is seen as…
Creative writing teaching-learning practice in second language learning
This contribution comprises a didactic analysis of a course in literary criticism and creative writing based on a programme of transcultural poetry and plurilingual creative writing activities loosely inspired by Oulipean writing constraints. First, the notions of jargon and thought style (Sensevy, Gruson, et Le Hénaff, 2019; Bloor, 2020; Bloor, 2022) serve to identify the epistemic potential of this course in relation to canonical cultural pract…
“There is a time for building…”
This dossier comes out of a recent attempt to launch, or consolidate, creative writing as a discipline within English Studies in French universities. It follows on from an earlier E-rea dossier, Letters to Swift, co-edited by Ruth Menzies and Jean Viviès in 2021. The project began with the creation of a new panel at the annual conference of the SAES (Société des Anglicistes de l’Enseignement Supérieur) in 2020. The response to our call for papers…
James Fenton in South-East Asia
In the early 1970s British poet James Fenton (1949-), whose poetry straddles the gap between high culture and political violence, worked as a newspaper reporter in South-East Asia and visited Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. In the mid-1970s he spent two years in the Philippines and in 1980 he was in Korea where he witnessed the Gwangju Uprising. These places provided Fenton with the material for some of his most moving and admirable poems, as well as…
