  • Korean anthropology between global market and local community

    Kwang-Ok Kim, Okpyo Moon•ARTICLE•Asian Anthropology•2017

This article presents a brief historical review of anthropology in Korea. Then, recent trends are examined, with particular reference to anthropological knowledge in the context of the Korean loca…

    Okpyo Moon•ARTICLE•Asian Anthropology•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper examines the dynamics involved in the use of local culture in contemporary Korea, with specific reference to the case of Hahoe village in southeast Korea. I identify three different ideological stages in the production of Hahoe culture. In the 1970s, the village was recreated as a hometown of Confucian tradition and began to earn nationwide recognition. In the 1980s, the Hahoe Mask Dance Drama was reconstructed as a symbol of anti-esta…

  • Korean anthropology: A search for new paradigms

    Okpyo Moon•CHAPTER•Asian Anthropology•2004

After some 40 years of history, however, there are still only nine university departments teaching the subject (five as independent degree courses and four as jo…
