  • Cultural value discrepancies, strategic positioning and integrated identity: American migrants’ experiences of being the Other in mainland China

Yang Liu, Eric M Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Focusing on 35 American migrants’ experiences in mainland China, this study provides a new conceptual understanding of international migrants’ Other-identity formulated in and through intercultural encounters. Guided by grounded theory, this study demonstrates that American migrants’ Otherness was frequently triggered by their divergences from Chinese cultural values’ emphasis on individuals’ conformity to interdependence, group interests, group …

  • Cultural fusion theory: An alternative to acculturation

    Stephen M Croucher, Eric M Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2016•Cited by: 18•References: 25

This article lays out a theoretical framework for cultural fusion theory. This theory borrows from various theoretical frameworks to provide a more realistic description of the immigrant experience. Specifically, cultural fusion theory describes how newcomers acculturate into the dominant culture and maintain aspects of their minority culture, while at the same time the dominant or host culture also fuses aspects off the newcomer’s culture into t…

  • A critique of Bernstein’s beyond objectivism and relativism: Science, hermeneutics, and praxis

    Open Access•Jonathan Matusitz, Eric M Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Poiesis•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This analysis comments on Bernstein’s lack of clear understanding of subjectivity, based on his book, Beyond Objectivism and Relativism: Science, Hermeneutics, and Praxis . Bernstein limits his interpretation of subjectivity to thinkers such as Gadamer and Habermas. The authors analyze the ideas of classic scholars such as Edmund Husserl and Friedrich Nietzsche. Husserl put forward his notion of transcendental subjectivity and phenomenological ra…

  • Abduction as the type of inference that characterizes the development of a grounded theory

    Open Access•Rudy Richardson, Eric Hans Kramer et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2006•Cited by: 17•References: 8

In this article, abduction is introduced in relation to theorizing in grounded theory. Theoretical insights are inevitable cornerstones of the development of a grounded theory and abduction is worked out as a type of inference that characterizes this development. How abduction could be used in grounded theorizing is shown in a grounded theory research on 'organizing doubt', i.e. the way Dutch army units are formed with self-organizing capabilitie…

  • The Emerging Monoculture: Assimilation and the Model Minority

    Eric Kramer•BOOK•The Emerging Monoculture•2003

Kramer brings together experts from a variety of minority backgrounds and from around the world to give their perspectives on the most pervasive ideology today, globalism. The basic premise is that a developed country is different from a developed community. They need not be mutually exclusive, but neither is it assumed that they are necessarily consonant. The various essays offer answers to such vital questions as What does it mean to become a '…

  • Making global faith universal: Media and a Brazilian prosperity movement

    Eric W Kramer, Eric Kramer•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 14

One characteristic of Brazilian neo‐Pentecostal ministries that draw on the Faith Movement is an accentuation of performative and metonymic linkages between supernatural power and ritual. While sharing elements with a broader transnational Faith movement, this Prosperity theology and its associated practices emerge out of the contemporary sociocultural context of Brazilian ‘popular’ religions as they relate to a consumer economy. The paper addres…
