  • Chaplains' Roles as Mediators in Critical Clinical Decisions

    Open Access•Susan J Harris•ARTICLE•The AMA Journal of Ethic•2018

Chaplains provide spiritual care and support to patients, families, and hospital staff. What may be less familiar is that chaplains also help mediate decisions among patients, family members, and clinical teams. How clinicians, patients, and families formulate and articulate their goals and concerns can be informed either directly or indirectly by religious values. Finding common ground and common language can be helpful for both the medical team…

  • Jesuit Scientific Activity in the Overseas Missions, 1540-1773

    Susan J Harris, Steven J Harris•ARTICLE•Isis•2005•Cited by: 21•References: 8

Within the context of national traditions in colonial science, the scientific activities of Jesuit missionaries present us with a unique combination of challenges. The multinational membership of the Society of Jesus gave its missionaries access to virtually every Portuguese, Spanish, and French colony. The Society was thus compelled to engage an astonishingly diverse array of cultural and natural environments, and that diversity of contexts is r…

  • Introduction: Thinking Locally, Acting Globally

    Susan J Harris, Steven J Harris•ARTICLE•Configurations•1998

Introduction: Thinking Locally, Acting Globally Steven J. Harris (bio) Are we to understand the history of early modern science in terms of the global framework provided by grand narratives of the Scientific Revolution, or ought we to think solely in terms of local knowledges rooted in particular places and times and bounded by particular social contexts? Such was the only partially rhetorical question asked in the title of a conference held in t…

  • Confession-Building, Long-Distance Networks, and the Organization of Jesuit Science

    Susan J Harris, Steven J Harris•ARTICLE•Early Science and Medicine•1996•Cited by: 7

The ability of the Society of Jesus to engage in a broad and enduring tradition of scientific activity is here addressed in terms of its programmatic commitment to the consolidation and extension of the Catholic confession (i.e., to a multipronged program of confession-building) and its mastery of the administrative apparatus necessary to operate long-distance networks. The Society's early move into two major apostolates, one in education and the…

The RCAF, with a total strength of 4061 officers and men on 1 September 1939, grew by the end of the war to a strength of more than 263,000 men and women. This important and well-illustrated new history shows how they contributed to the resolution of the most significant conflict of our time.

  • Transposing the Merton Thesis: Apostolic Spirituality and the Establishment of the Jesuit Scientific Tradition

    Open Access•Susan J Harris, Steven J Harris•ARTICLE•Science in Context•1989•Cited by: 6•References: 21

The ArgumentDespite more than fifty years of debate on the Merton thesis, there have been few attempts to substantiate Merton's argument through empirically based comparative studies. This study of the Jesuit scientific tradition is intended to serve as a test of some of Merton's central claims.Jesuit science is remarkable for its scope and longevity, and is distinguished by its markedly empirical and utilitarian orientation. In this paper I exam…
