  • Feminism beyond welfare: Care, Socialisation and the Politics of the State

    Open Access•Eduardo Portella•ARTICLE•Feminist Theory•2025•References: 15

Feminism has long been concerned with the role of the state in facilitating the oppression of women on the one hand and mitigating this oppression on the other. Though much has been written on the function, effects and possibilities of the liberal welfare state, the same volume of study has not been devoted to more positive proposals about the role of the state as such. Discussion of positive proposals for state politics has not been entirely abs…

  • The Formal and Real Subsumption of Gender Relations: Challenging the Transhistorical Status of ‘Patriarchy’

    Eduardo Portella, Larry Alan Busk•ARTICLE•Historical Materialism•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Attempts to unify Marxist and feminist social critique have been vexed by the fact that ‘patriarchy’ predates the advent of capitalism (its transhistorical status). Feminists within the Marxist, socialist, and materialist traditions have responded to this point by either granting patriarchy a certain autonomy relative to capitalism (the ‘dual/triple systems’ approach), or by suggesting that patriarchal relations have a foundational and necessary …

  • The Weapon of Theory Reconsidered: Anti-Colonial Marxism and the Post-Cold War Imaginary

Eduardo Portella, Elizabeth Portella et al.•ARTICLE•Radical Philosophy Review•2022•Cited by: 1

In this article, the author argues that anti-colonial Marxism has been obscured and distorted by the contemporary post-Cold War imaginary. The author analyzes the historical-political context in which the narrative of Marxism and decolonization develop during and after the Cold War. Focusing on the writings of Frantz Fanon, Amílcar Cabral, Thomas Sankara, and Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the author reconstructs the “principles” of anti-colonial Marxism…

  • Caught in Its Movement”: Liberalism, Critique, and Dewey’s Implicit Philosophy of History

Eduardo Portella•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2019

“Philosophers,” Dewey writes, “are parts of history, caught in its movement; creators perhaps in some measure of its future, but also assuredly creatures of its past” (Dewey 1927, 2). The question of the philosopher’s embeddedness in either her own or some earlier historical moment constitutes an important theme in Dewey’s account of pragmatism, in particular his account of politics. In lieu of a formal treatise on history, this paper focuses on …

  • Who Are the True Machiavellians? Althusser and Merleau-Ponty Reading The Prince

Open Access•Larry Alan Busk, Eduardo Portella et al.•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2017

This essay examines Machiavelli's dissonant relationship to the liberal tradition by drawing on the interpretations of Althusser and Merleau-Ponty. Reading The Prince following these critics allows us to see that, in an important sense, the ostensibly non- or anti-Machiavellian character of the liberal classics is nevertheless Machiavellian in an inadvertent way. In other words, liberal political theory is Machiavellian in form, even if anti-Mach…

  • Utopia's Legacy (A Postscript)

    Open Access•Eduardo Portella•ARTICLE•Diogenes•2006

There are several ways to approach utopia and to appraise the range of vital sustenance and broken promises that it conveys. As a starting interpretative strategy, one might consider utopia as a canonized idea: utopia is nothing if not a construct of Paradise on Earth. That is the form under which it prospered from the Renaissance on, spinning into a vote of confidence for the New World

  • Introduction: Indications of the Knowledge Society

    Open Access•Eduardo Portella•ARTICLE•Diogenes•2003

Is 'knowledge society' yet another empty slogan? More than ever, 'knowledge is power'. But we can hardly affirm that the society we live in is based on the vigour of knowledge. The market price placed on knowledge fails to provide it with the needed qualitative impetus. Inequities remain the blind spot of technological systems. To be sure, we are living in an information society at higher scales of exchange, with 'a great deal of information, but…
