  • Asylum seekers’ response to political risk in their countries of origin: New evidence for asylum inflows to the OECD

    Open Access•Felicitas Nowak‐lehmann, Paúl Elguezabal et al.•ARTICLE•Migration Studies•2026

This paper quantifies the importance of political push factors as drivers of asylum migration for a global sample of 84 origin and 31 OECD destination countries over the period 2000–2023. Political push factors include political terror, civil liberties, political rights, and broader political risk factors. We estimate a gravity model using a Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood estimator with high-dimensional fixed effects, controlling for asylum re…

  • Global trends of pandemic-prone and epidemic-prone disease outbreaks in 2024

Open Access•Juan Armando Torres Munguía, Inmaculada Martinez-Zarzoso•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2026

During 2024, the number of pandemic-prone and epidemic-prone disease outbreaks worldwide was estimated at 301. The data highlight a shift in disease outbreak patterns, with a decline in the number of countries reporting public health events of concern linked to COVID-19 and a rise in those reporting outbreaks of viral diseases transmitted by vectors. About 90% of the outbreaks in 2024 were associated with COVID-19, dengue, yellow fever, Oropouche…

    Open Access•Luis R Díaz Pavez, Inmaculada Martinez-Zarzoso•ARTICLE•World Economy•2024

The labour market effects of automation have gained significant attention from scholars and policymakers. Concerns about negative effects are important in emerging countries, where a rapid acceleration of robot adoption and an increasing involvement in global value chains have been observed in recent years, with the subsequent increase in exposure to foreign competition. This paper estimates the effect of local and foreign robots on labour market…

  • The impact of migration on wages in Costa Rica

    Open Access•Adriana Cardozo, Luis R Díaz Pavez et al.•ARTICLE•Migration Studies•2023•References: 6

In recent years, Costa Rica has experienced greater international migration from neighboring countries due to political, economic, and social reasons, raising discussions on the impact of migration on wages of native Costa Rican workers. • Sending money home: Transaction cost and remittances to developing countries

Open Access•Junaid Ahmed, Mazhar Mughal et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

Reducing the cost of remitting is one of the targets within the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 10). A key factor that causes migrants to use informal channels when sending money back home is the high cost of transferring funds through formal channels. This study examines whether and to what extent the reduction in the cost of sending remittances increases the flow of remittances to developing countries, and whether larger amounts are rem…

  • Aid and Trade – A Donor's Perspective

    Felicitas Nowak‐Lehmann D, Felicitas Nowak-Lehmann D et al.•PREPRINT•The Journal of Development Studies•2009

One reason donors provide foreign aid is to support their exports to aid-recipient countries. Time series data for Germany suggests an average return of between US$1.04-$1.50 for each US dollar of aid spent by Germany. Although this is well below previous estimates, the value is robust to different specifications and econometric approaches. Interestingly, we find strong evidence of crowding out between bilateral donors in the sense that bilateral…
