A global trend, an emerging field, a multiplicity of understandings: Science communication in 39 countries Toss Gascoigne and Bernard SchieleThis book is a comprehensive attempt to chart the history of science communication as it developed in the modern era.It tells the story from the perspective of researchers and practitioners in the field, collecting accounts of how modern science communication has developed internationally. The book contains 4…
Communicating Science: A Global Perspective
Communicating Science: A Global Perspective
Modern science communication has emerged in the twentieth century as a field of study, a body of practice and a profession-and it is a practice with deep historical roots. We have seen the birth of interactive science centres, the first university actions in teaching and conducting research, and a sharp growth in employment of science communicators
The Cityscapes Dataset for Semantic Urban Scene Understanding
Visual understanding of complex urban street scenes is an enabling factor for a wide range of applications. Object detection has benefited enormously from large-scale datasets, especially in the context of deep learning. For semantic urban scene understanding, however, no current dataset adequately captures the complexity of real-world urban scenes. To address this, we introduce Cityscapes, a benchmark suite and large-scale dataset to train and t…
Visitor studies: A short history
This article offers a historical and critical analysis of the preoccupations and problems covered by studies on evaluation since the first works by Gilman in 1911. It reveals the paradigms on which the studies were built, to illustrate the dynamics put in place, to question the objectives of evaluation, and to highlight the tensions between studies concerning cultural democratization and those linked to marketing. The following historical periods…
Science Communication in the World: Practices, Theories and Trends
The wonders of science have a powerful hold on the imagination, yet the challenge of conveying to the public the expanding frontiers of human scientific knowledge grows daily more complex. This analysis of the process has three goals. First, to offer a survey of research conducted in the field of public communication of science and technology (PCST) over the past four decades, in a range of countries. Then—and this second ambition is enabled by t…
Communicating Science in Social Contexts: New models, new practices
Science in magazines, and its readers
How do magazines make science accessible and appealing to a broad readership? To answer this question, we studied an article which was published in Le Figaro magazine , the weekly magazine supplement of a large French daily newspaper. The article, which presents information on cancer and immunology, is illustrated with three large and spectacular colour photographs of microscopic corpuscles. A semio-linguistic and communications analysis revealed…
Creative Interaction of Visitor and Exhibition

Scientific Imagery and Popularized Imagery: Differences and Similarities in the Photographic Portraits of Scientists
Previous works on popularization of science in magazines were strongly influenced by traditional methods used with scientific discourse, and pictures were only analyzed in terms of efficiency. This paper will focus on the role of imagery portraying science and scientists in Science et Vie and La Recherche, two French magazines. La Recherche uses more complex photographs, requiring more scientific knowledge from the reader, while Science et Vie us…
Notes Pour Une Analyse De La Compétence Communicationnelle De l'Exposition Scientifique
