  • Digital disintermediation, technical and national sovereignty

Open Access•Víctor Sampedro, Víctor Sampedro Blanco et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 10

This article analyses the digital shutdown experienced in Catalonia within the framework of the independence referendum of 1 October 2017, which had been declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court. We question the notion of digital disintermediation and examine how Internet control and blackout processes are not exclusive to authoritarian political systems, but have instead begun to develop in Western democracies in situations of socio-poli…

  • Leaks-based journalism and media scandals

Open Access•Víctor Sampedro, Víctor Sampedro Blanco et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 22

This article offers a comparative study of three media scandals arising from two types of leaks: official ones (the Monedero Case and the Pujol Case) and those originating from citizens (the Falciani List). Official leaks are carried out by elites and respond to private/partisan interests. Citizens’ leaks come from anonymous individuals who deliver huge databases to the media for journalistic treatment. Our objective is to analyse the coverage re…

  • New intermediations of the electoral information flows

    Open Access•Josep Lobera, Víctor Sampedro et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 37

In this article, we analyse the evolution of electoral information flows in Spain in the digital environment. Three post-electoral surveys (2008, 2011 and 2015) among internet users ( N = 4,312) and a series of focus groups enable us to analyse the process of expansion of the Digital Public Sphere (DPS) in Spain. We show that, instead of disintermediation, new intermediations of the electoral information flows appear. The candidacies no longer mo…

Víctor Sampedro, Víctor Sampedro Blanco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies•2014•Cited by: 21•References: 3

Since May 2011, the Spanish 15-M Movement (commonly referred as los indignados [the outraged]) has become a major player in the domestic political scenario. Public opinion data reveal that there is a cross-sectional support for the 15-M among the general population in Spain, affecting people of different ages, genders, employment situations and levels of urbanization. The data present a “movement of dissent” and confirm the crisis of the consensu…

• Grounding the Displaced

    Open Access•Víctor Sampedro, Víctor Sampedro Blanco•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•1998•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Local media perform a linking function for displaced audiences in a global landscape. Consumption of home-based press when one is in a foreign context is mainly a ritualistic cultural practice in securing personal identity, familiar formulations of cultural spaces, and communities of origin. Ethnographic research revealed that national newspapers allowed readers to (re)produce situated identity marks menaced by globalization. Audiences may use lo…

Three models of media-state relations are discussed in terms of possible media outcomes of social protest. These models are used to examine political and media agenda building in relation to movement challenges. An analysis of the coverage of the antimilitary movement by th…
