Climate change is among humanity's greatest challenges, and the Middle East and Central Asia (ME&CA) region is on the frontlines of its human, physical, and economic ramifications.Much of the region lies in already harsh climate zones, where global warming exacerbates desertification, water stress, and rising sea levels. This trend entails deep economic disruptions, endangers food security, and undermines public health-with ripple effects on pover…

  • Geography of legal water disputes in Chile

Open Access•Roberto Costumero, Julia Sanchez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

Water resources are the main productive source in Chile. Growing competition for water use causes conflicts which end up in courts (Courts of Appeal and The Supreme Court). Legal disputes end when the courts issue a judgement which is recorded. The volume of court decisions made makes the task of searching, analyzing, and extracting knowledge from these texts challenging. This research is aimed at developing a mapping tool to explore spatio-tempo…

  • Age Effects and Sample Size in Free Listing

    Open Access•Robert W Schrauf, Julia Sanchez•ARTICLE•CAM•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 16

The literature in the psychology of aging shows cognitive declines among older adults in many abilities. This study addresses the question of whether informant age affects production in free listing. The study compares numbers of free-listed items across four quotidian domains by groups of older ( n = 30) versus younger ( n = 31) adults. Smaller samples of five, ten, fifteen, twenty, and twenty-five were also analyzed to assess age by sample size…

  • Using Freelisting to Identify, Assess, and Characterize Age Differences in Shared Cultural Domains

    Robert W Schrauf, Julia Sanchez•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2008•Cited by: 13•References: 9

  • Ancient Maya Royal Strategies

    Open Access•Julia Sanchez, Julia L J Sanchez•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 17

Ancient Maya monumental art was designed to enact the physical, social, and ritual hierarchy. Physically, sculpture created barriers and access patterns that altered movement through sites. Monumental architecture separated ritual participants in buildings from audiences in the plazas below. Access to monuments and portrayals on monuments in part defined social and power hierarchies. Motifs were altered to communicate various forms of power appro…

  • A Re-Evaluation of Mimbres Faunal Subsistence

    Julia Sanchez, Julia L J Sanchez•ARTICLE•KIVA•1996•Cited by: 18•References: 6

Data from NAN Ruin, Grant County, and Old Town, Luna County, New Mexico, suggest that spatial factors influenced variability in faunal subsistence in the Mimbres Valley from A.D. 1150. It had been accepted that environmental effects from the increase of agriculture in the valley caused the jackrabbit population to increase and the cottontail and artiodactyl populations to decrease. However, this reconstruction is not supported when previously pub…

  • Comparison of 1/8′′- and 1/4′′-Mesh Recovery of Controlled Samples of Small-to-Medium-Sized Mammals

    Open Access•Brian S Shaffer, Brian Shaffer et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1994•Cited by: 21•References: 11

Most previous screen experiments have assessed various mesh-size biases in the recovery of faunal remains from specific archaeological samples. These tests provided detailed information about recovery biases at those sites. To augment these previous tests, Shaffer (1992) conducted 1/4′′-screen tests on modern comparative mammal skeletons to assess specific biases for the taxa tested. However, because 1/8′′ screens are now widely used in archaeolo…
