Strikes of physicians and other health care workers in sub-Saharan African countries
Public health capacity development in Africa
The public health context is becoming increasingly more complex, gradually associating traditional public health threats connected with infectious diseases with other health problems. This leads to a triple burden of diseases interrelated with growing threats to health security and new conceptual paradigms to approach them [1–3]. More than any other region, Africa feels the weight [...]
One Health defines an emerging sixth wave of public health development
According to researchers, there have been five waves in public health development over the years, conceptualised “according to the focus of approach taken” as structural (1830-1900), biomedical (1890-1950), clinical (1940–1980), social (1960-2015), and cultural (2010-present). These labels are indicative of activity characterising each wave [1].
“Get us partnerships!” - a qualitative study of Angolan and Mozambican health academics’ experiences with North/South partnerships
BACKGROUND: Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 focuses on North/South partnerships for sustainable development. Literature on research partnerships and capacity -building often neglects how these processes are carried out in practice, their social impacts and participants' subjective experiences. Recognizing the increasingly global dimensions of Higher Education Institutions, the University Development and Innovation - Africa project (UDI-A) w…
Negotiating markets for health
Scarce evidence exists on the features, determinants and implications of physicians' dual practice, especially in resource-poor settings. This study considered dual practice patterns in three African cities and the respective markets for physician services, with the objective of understanding the influence of local determinants on the practice. Forty-eight semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted in the three cities to understand fea…
Brazil-Africa technical cooperation in health
BACKGROUND: Brazil is rapidly becoming an influential player in development cooperation, also thanks to its high-visibility health projects in Africa and Latin America. The 4th High-level Forum on Aid Effectiveness held in Busan in late 2011 marked a change in the way development cooperation is conceptualised. The present paper explores the issue of emerging donors' contribution to the post-Busan debate on aid effectiveness by looking at Brazil's…
Scaling-up the medical workforce in Timor-Leste
Sixty years of reform in the Portuguese health system
The authors review 60 years of health care reform in Portugal. The major reforms emerged after the 1974 revolution. The initial period, up to the 1ate 1980s, was a period of development of a very centralised national health service. From the 1990s onwards, concerns with decentralisation were reflected in a number of initiatives: the emergence of regional health authorities; internal health markets and contracting agencies; the purchaser-provider …
