John Stuart Mill on economic fluctuations and commercial crises
Many early 19th century economic thinkers have provided ideas to explain the causes of commercial crises, as against the Classical belief on the impossibility of a general disequilibrium between demand and supply. J.S. Mill contributed to this debate suggesting an analysis of money and credit as generators of economic fluctuations and crises. Mill apprehended the significance of the function of money as a store of value and explained cyclical flu…

A. G. Papandreou’s Academic Economic Thought 1943–1963
The aim of this article is to make an overall assessment of Andreas George Papandreou’s theoretical contributions during his American academic career, from the perspective of the history of economic thought. Papandreou contributed to the postwar development of economic thought in competition theory and experimental testing of consumer theory. In developing competition theory, he introduced a new method of evaluating the monopolistic power of a fi…
Covid-19 as a Potential Accelerator. A Euro-Centric Perspective
In the words of the IMF, the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have generated “a crisis like no other”. Economic shocks often result in social and political quivers within states but also affect relations between states. In the short conceptual note that follows, we concentrate on the European Union and we explore the possible effects the COVID-19 economic fallout will have on its already strained cohesion. We argue that it has the p…
Trustworthiness as a Moral Determinant of Economic Activity
This paper reviews the way that social norms and ethical values in general, and trustworthiness in particular, is perceived to affect the behavior of economic agents in view of the work of Adam Smith, Nassau William Senior and John Stuart Mill. Classical Political economists held that economic actions are context-dependent and thus constantly under the influence of social norms and values. It is further suggested here that Classical Economists ha…
Modeling institutional change in transition economies
A particular aspect of path dependence and change is discussed here. To understand institutional change in transition economies, a game theoretic model that combines economic changes with changes in the social values system is proposed, in a mechanism where the two changes are interdependent and influence one another in a repeated game. The speed of change in this dynamic model is the result of two rates, the ‘‘learning rate’’, how fast agents ar…
From Mill to Weber
Weber recognized explicitly that his concept of ideal-type is directly borrowed from economic theory and as it is commonly admitted from the German-speaking 'marginalist school'. Nevertheless, the construction of ideal-types reminds greatly the definition of economic rationality made by John Stuart Mill, who also built up a concept to explain, in individualistic terms, the real world in a given historical and geographical context. The position de…
[eng] The assumptions controversy in the 1870's The purpose of this paper is to present one aspect of the english "Battle on Method" between the Historical School and the last representatives of the Ricardian Political Economy, reformulated by J.S. Mill. One of the main points of the historist reaction was the principle of economic behaviour chosen by the ricardians as psychological premise of economic reasoning. Their critique aimed at demonstra…
