  • Spain: From Massive Immigration to Vast Emigration

    Open Access•Mario Izquierdo, Juan F Jimeno et al.•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Migration•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 13

Large immigration flows during the 1995-2007 period increased the weight of foreigners living in Spain to 12 % of the total population. The rapid increase in unemployment associated with the Great Recession and the subsequent European debt crisis, substantially changed migration flows, so that, from the beginning of the 2010s, Spain experienced positive net outflows. In this paper, we take on three tasks. First, we show that sensitivity of migrat…

  • On‐the‐Job Search in a Matching Model with Heterogeneous Jobs and Workers

    Open Access•Juan J Dolado, Marcel Jansen et al.•PREPRINT•The Economic Journal•2008•Cited by: 9

This paper examines the effects of transitory skill mismatch in a matching model with heterogeneous jobs and workers. In our model, some high-educated workers may accept unskilled jobs for which they are over-qualified but are allowed to engage in on-the-job search in pursuit of a better job. We show that this feature has relevant implications for the set of potential equilibria, the unemployment rates of the different types of workers, the degre…

  • Drawing Lessons from the Boom of Temporary Jobs in Spain

    Open Access•Juan J Dolado, Carlos García Serrano et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2002•Cited by: 33•References: 13

We review some lessons from the Spanish experience of using temporary employment contracts for regular jobs since 1984. The focus is on the role of fixed--term contracts with low severance pay, which have substituted for reform of employment protection legislation for permanent contracts. We consider the main findings about this reform on the Spanish labour market in the light of the main theoretical implications derived from models dealing with …
