  • Participatory Management

    Open Access•Michael Maccoby•CHAPTER•Wiley Encyclopedia of Management•2015

The concept of participatory or participative management has been used in the context of traditional hierarchical industrial organizations or bureaucracies. It means that, to a greater or lesser extent, managers share their power with employees, managers, or non‐managers who are lower in the structure. The opposite of participative management is autocratic or dictatorial management. Within the traditional organizational framework, there are three…

    Michael Maccoby•ARTICLE•International Forum of…•2002

To fully develop a science of social character, three aspects of Fromm's social character theory need to be clarified. The first has to do with the difference between individual and social character. Fromm expanded on Freud's description of normal types: erotic (receptive), obsessive (hoarding) and narcissistic (exploitative). Besides the concept of social character, Fromm made three major contributions to the psychoanalytic theory of character: …

Envy is a pan-human phenomenon, universally feared, at least subconsciously, as a particularly dangerous emotion, since it implies hostility and aggression capable of destroying individuals and even societies. Especially in Western society, man has rather successfully repressed his true feelings about envy, which he is taught is the most shameful and reprehensible of all emotions. But even while denying it, man in all cultures has found devices, …

  • On Mexican National Character

    Open Access•Michael Maccoby•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1967•Cited by: 2

Mexican authors have limited their discussions of national character to the mestizo population of the central plateau. Their analyses are overburdened with a self-denigra tive view of Mexican national character, stressing inferiority feelings stamped by the Conquest. More recently, Mexican psychoanalysts have focused on the Conquest and subsequent revolutionary upheavals as generators of conflict between the sexes, which they see as the most cruc…
