  • The Effects of Career Origins on Subsequent Socioeconomic Attainments

    The fundamental contention of this article is that the institutional environment encompassing a worker's career origins has important and long-lasting effects on subsequent career developments. Empirically, we demonstrate that industry of first job after school is a significant and strong predictor of earnings and occupational SEI for workers late in their careers.     In recent years, sociologists have increasingly investigated the ways in which institutional or organizational features of the labor market constrain workers' mobility patterns throughout the economy. Building on this work, this article analyzes union effects on patterns of job mobility.     This article endeavors to explicate some of the mechanisms whereby the dual sector distinction is relevant for earnings determination. We estimate both direct and indirect sectoral effects, disaggregate the dependent variable into hourly wage and annual hours worked components and explore the interplay between sector and occupational distributions.
