  • Herding the Hordes: Using Location-Based Services and Mobile Messaging to Affect Visitor Behavior

Open Access•Johan Högberg, Erik Wästlund et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Hospitality & Tourism…•2020

This study investigates modes of moving visitors in a tourist location using a location-based service. Two field experiments were conducted at a zoo using real visitors as participants and behavior-based dependent variables. Experiment 1 included 2,618 visitors and investigated whether the amount of rewards, in the form of free spins on a wheel of fortune, would affect the choice to move to this wheel and claim the offered rewards. The choice of …

  • Innovation and Embodiment in a Small Town Hotel

Open Access•Kristiansand NO Agderforskning, Kirsti Mathiesen Hjemdahl et al.•CHAPTER•Sensitive Objects•2016

Innovators engage in activities that tend to absorb them body and soul. In Chapter 10 the authors walk through a typical day with an innovative hotel manager. Notwithstanding her training in the hotel trade, she seems to be in a constant dialogue with hotel rooms, furniture, buildings, and the urban surroundings. Facetiously, she claims to be using ‘whim as a method’. That, of course, turns out to be a cover for how she succeeds in staying attune…

  • A Troubled Past: Fieldworking in a Contested Place

Open Access•Jonas Frykman, Kirsti Mathiesen Hjemdahl•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Social Work•2011•References: 1

The aim of this study is to demonstrate how political meaning is manifested with the aid of monuments, and to look at how other material objects also become invested with political ideology and are eventually incorporated by citizens and filled with meaning and affective power. For this project, a phenomenological approach was deemed to be the most suitable. The classical hierarchy between visiting researchers and native informants was overcome b…

  • TWISTED Field Working Fighting for the Relevance of Being Connected

Open Access•Kirsti Mathiesen Hjemdahl, Kirsti Mathiesen Hjemdahl Mathiesen Hjemdahl•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•2011

Over the last three years I have been doing the most irregular ethnography ever, from a position as a non-researcher in a regional innovation program in Norway. There is reason to believe that the demand for so-called applied ethnography is rising, and that increasingly cultural researchers will be offered opportunities to apply their academic knowledge in different practical situations. This article presents experiences of applied work in one pa…

  • Backlash

Open Access•Kirsti Mathiesen Hjemdahl, Nevena Škrbić Alempijević•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Europaea•2005•Cited by: 1

Once a year the streets of Zagreb are filled with piles of junk, old stuff that the inhabitants of the town centre no longer need or want, cleaned out of attics, cellars, drawers and closets. It is carried out of front doors or thrown out of windows. And as the days proceed, the pavements and doorsteps become more and more difficult to pass through. Sometimes one gets a glimpse of previously well-known, but now long and often deliberately forgott…
