  • The Cultural Grounding of Kinship

    D Read, M Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•L Homme•2014•Cited by: 5•References: 29

• The Place of Kinship in the Social System

    F K Lehman, F K L Chit Hlaing•ARTICLE•Structure and Dynamics eJournal…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This papers examines the recent controversy as to whether there is any universally defined domain of kinship in sociocultural systems from the point of view of the philosophy of science, in particular, the classical positivism (e.g., of Radcliffe-Brown and of Murdock) that I show to have motivated the question. It also examines the American version of the controversy, as with Schneider, and shows that, again, the question arises because of essent…

  • Aspects of a formalist theory of kinship

    F K Lehman•ARTICLE•Anthropological Theory•2001•Cited by: 9•References: 22

In particular, I shall argue that these make kinship the unique case of a truly ascribed, rather than achieved social structure. In that connection, I shall also show that the structure of the…

  • Computational complexity in the cognitive modelling of cosmological ideas

    Janet Dixon Keller, F K Lehman•CHAPTER•Cognitive Aspects of Religious…•1993

We will focus here on cognitive anthropology's contribution to the study of the representation of complex cultural categories. We will take two metaphysical concepts from Keller's field research in Oceania, which, by intuitive standards, are complex. Using these concepts, we will explore the issues of complexity identified above. The research site is the Polynesian outlier, West Futuna, Vanuatu. The targeted concepts are ones that traditional cog…
