  • Political Animals

    Open Access•Luísa Reis-Castro•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2026

What does it mean to live—and therefore die—in a more‐than‐human world? This review essay explores that question through reflections on teaching Political Animals: Species, Class, Race, and Gender, an undergraduate course that introduces students to scholarship on human‐nonhuman relations. Organized around four questions—What are the politics of connections in more‐than‐human worlds? What is health or well‐being when some multispecies relations c…

  • Can the Mosquito Bite? The Multispecies Transmutation of Wolbachia Mosquitoes as Biotechnologies of Epidemic Control in Rio de Janeiro

    Open Access•Luísa Reis-Castro, Luísa Reis Castro•ARTICLE•Engaging Science Technology and…•2025

A bite from the Aedes aegypti mosquito can transmit pathogenic viruses such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. While public health campaigns have historically focused on eliminating this vector species, a project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, proposes to release A. aegypti carrying the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia. This microbe, passed from female A. aegypti to their progeny, would hinder viral transmission, making the bite less of a threat and …

  • Devir-Sem

    Open Access•Luísa Reis-Castro•ARTICLE•Novos Debates•2024•Referencias: 75

  • Bites, Blood, Boundaries

Luísa Reis-Castro, Jia Hui Lee•ARTICLE•The Journal of Interdisciplinary…•2024

Domestication is a set of processes that requires active reconfigurations of interspecies relations, environments, and technologies. In this view, both ethnographic and historical sources help us track the exact ways that domestication as a practice actively reveals and conceals relations of power among people and between people and other animals. Two pertinent cases-training rats in Tanzania to detect landmines and releasing mosquitoes to deter …

  • "Ambivalent Insects" as Tools and Targets

    Lisa Onaga, Luísa Reis-Castro•ARTICLE•Isis•2024•Referencias: 11

The binary categories of harm and benefit have often shaped how historians frame discussions of insects. Scientists also leverage the binary framing of insects as tools and targets to carry out their work, especially in the development of biological technologies for pest control. This essay emphasizes how binaries function in scientific practice. Two case studies spanning from the twentieth century to the recent past illustrate the shift away fro…

  • Science, Race, and Racism

Open Access•Rosana Castro, Rosana Gómez Castro et al.•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2022

How are historically constituted racial technologies and categories mobilized, produced, and materialized in practices and discourses within supposedly universal science? This entry considers the multiple ways in which ethnographic research can showcase how particular histories of racism are updated through scientific practices, and how global scientific projects capitalize on local racial hierarchies. It examines the nexus between science, race,…

  • Becoming Without

    Open Access•Luísa Reis-Castro•ARTICLE•Environmental Humanities•2021

The Aedes aegypti mosquito, known as the vector for Zika, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever viruses, has historically been targeted by public health campaigns as an enemy to be eliminated. However, new strategies, such as the transgenic approach, biologically modify the A. aegypti so that they can be deployed to control their own population—here, mosquito breeding and mating is operationalized as an insecticide. In this case, the insect must …

    Open Access•Emily Yates‐doerr, Emily Yates-Doerr et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Tecnologia e Sociedade•2019
