  • Warlords, priests and the politics of ethnic cleansing: A case-study from rural Bosnia Hercegovina

    Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2000•Cited by: 29

There is a tendency among social scientists and others to interpret the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia Hercegovina as the result of a political policy carefully orchestrated from above and systematically carried out. Whatever eruptions of war violence might deviate from this interpretation are generally viewed as primitive balkanism, pointless acts, banditism or mental aberrations. Terms of this kind reflect an uncritical acceptance of a central or n…

  • Mass Graves, Stagnating Identification, and Violence: A Case Study in the Local Sources of "The War" in Bosnia Hercegovina

    Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 3

Bosnia Hercegovina is the site of a striking number of World War II monuments erected on or near mass graves. Unlike war monuments and war graves elsewhere in Europe, these memorials are bones of contention and they generate violent inter-ethnic animosity. This article describes the trials and tribulations surrounding one of these war monuments and the Serb and Croat communities involved. It addresses an aspect of ethnic cleansing that has hither…

  • St. Gerard's Wrath: Religious Power Politics in a Dutch Community

    Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1992•References: 6

The public humiliation of saints is generally viewed as a medieval ritual defence mechanism. To protect their property and rights from bands of marauding robbers and greedy landlords, monasteries mobilized the wrath of their patron saint. Recent research in the southern Netherlands has shown that similar rituals were performed there until the late nineteenth century, though their target had changed. Nineteenth-century monastic communities used th…

  • Female Suffering, Local Power Relations, and Religious Tourism: A Case Study from Yugoslavia

    Open Access•Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 17

The Yugoslavian pilgrimage center of Medjugorje has been confronted with a curious problem. Many local women are experiencing fear, illness, and a general uneasiness that make it difficult for them to carry out their daily tasks, including running the lodging houses that cater to the pilgrims. Their conclusion is that an increasing number of devils in the area are causing these problems. Men, including the priests, do not share this diagnosis; th…

  • Patronage in a Holy Place: Preliminary research notes on a ‘parallel structure’ in a Yugoslav pilgrimage centre

    Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Ethnos•1990•Cited by: 3•References: 11

Eric Wolf has argued that the study of patron‐client relations and other ‘parallel structures’ may be useful for furthering our understanding of complex societies. As for political patronage, Wolfs suggestion has been taken to heart. As far as religion is concerned, his suggestion has barely met with any response at all. Data obtained from a Yugoslav peasant community seem to indicate that Wolf s proposition is applicable to the religious field a…

  • Us" Catholics and "Them" Catholics in Dutch Brabant; The Dialectics of a Religious Factional Process

    Mart Bax•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1983•Cited by: 1

During last two decades or so, a curious religious factionalism has emerged among former peasantry of predominantly Roman Catholic province of North Brabant. Parish priests(diocesan clergy) and clergy have been caught up in a power struggle for hegemony over faithful laity. 2 The clergy seem to be more successful: even more parishioners attend mass in chapels of monasteries and convents and participate in various other ceremonies, resulting in a …
